Snow Expected To Impact Mountain Passes On 5, 14 Freeways Through Santa Clarita

Snow and rain are predicted to arrive in the Santa Clarita Valley later Wednesday, bringing flood watches and the possibility of snow to local freeway mountain passes.

Scattered showers are expected throughout Wednesday, before the brunt of the rain and snow arrives in the overnight hours, said Joe Sirard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS).

“We have some moisture increasing today with more weather moving in tonight,” Sirard said.

The peak of the storm is expected to impact the Santa Clarita Valley between midnight and 6 a.m. Thursday, according to NWS officials.

There is a chance to see periods of “high intensity” rain, according to Sirard.

The storm is also expected to bring snow as low as 2,500 feet in areas, which could impact the Escondido Summit and Grapevine.

Winds are also expected to tag along with the rain and snow.

South to southwest winds with gusts up to 45 mph are expected Wednesday night through Thursday.

With the wind, wet roads and snow in the mountains, drivers are urged to use caution on the roadways and expect possible road closures on the 5 and 14 Freeways, according to officials.

A flood watch is in effect for most of Los Angeles County from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday.

Residents living near the recent burn areas are being urged to be on high alert with the potential of debris and mud flows.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
