Snow Falls On Grapevine, More Expected To Come

A light layer of snow fell on the Grapevine early Monday morning, and officials expect “more to come” throughout the day and into the evening.

Early Monday morning, a light layer of snow fell over the Grapevine, leaving the landscape around the lanes of the I-5 Freeway in a white haze.

Officials have already begun to run traffic breaks in the area to slowly bring vehicles over the pass.

“Snow is falling below the 4,500 foot elevation Interstate 5 at the Tejon Pass,” reads a post from the CHP Fort Tejon Office. “Travel could be impacted on I-5 near the Grapevine. In the event I-5 is deemed unsafe for passage, CHP and Caltrans have contingency plans in place to deploy personnel to facilitate detours.”

Officials with the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast that the areas on the 5 Freeway could experience up to two inches of snow Monday evening.

“Snow will continue across the mountains above 4000 ft. and could cause some hazardous travel conditions across (the) I-5 Corridor across the Tejon Pass near the Grapevine,” reads a tweet issued by the NWS Monday morning.

The snowfall could result in slower commute times, minor debris flow in burn areas, and even “dangerous wintry driving conditions,” according to the NWS.

Officials advise motorists to use caution when travelling through the Grapevine, allowing for extra travel time as well as staying prepared with tire chains and a survival kit.

The snow comes a day before a Cold Weather Alert is scheduled to be extended to the Santa Clarita Valley, as wind chill temperatures are forecast to be below freezing.

“The Los Angeles County Health Officer is extending a Cold Weather Alert due to the National Weather Service’s forecast for low temperatures,” reads a statement issued by the LADPH on Saturday. “Wind chill temperatures are expected to be below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.”

The alert is set to last in the Santa Clarita Valley from Tuesday until Wednesday.

Ed. Note: This story will be updated as more information regarding weather on the Grapevine comes in.

  1. OH NO! SNOW! And a cold weather alert! And wind chill below 32 degrees. Anyone with a 6th-grade education (not from L.A. Unified) would know if you see snow everything else is obvious.
Sounds like a good time to turn off people’s power. What do you say, Garcetti?
