A cold storm is expected to bring up to six inches of snow in the Grapevine and two inches of rain for Santa Clarita over the Thanksgiving holiday, officials said Monday.
Temperatures are expected to be up to nine degrees cooler by Tuesday, said Keily Delerme, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
“Starting Wednesday, morning showers are expected to start moving through,” Delerme said.
The bulk of the rain is expected from Wednesday afternoon into Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, according to Delerme.
“The storm is expected to bring one to two inches of rain,” Delerme said.
Snow levels are expected to drop down to the 3,500-foot elevation, which would impact the Grapevine, according to officials.
“The Grapevine could see between three and six inches of snow,” Delerme said.
In the event snow does fall in the Grapevine and sticks to the ground, the California Highway Patrol will implement “Operation Snowflake,” according to officials.
During the operation, CHP is expected to shut down the 5 Freeway to motorists in Castaic, according to officials.
The storm could bring heavy downpours, which could bring some debris flows to the recent burn areas in Santa Clarita, Delerme said.
Through Friday, temperatures are expected to be in the 50s during the day and down into the 30s during the evening, Delerme said.
Free sand and sandbags are available at most Los Angeles County Fire Department stations throughout Santa Clarita for those in burn areas.
