Winds In Santa Clarita To Increase Bringing Elevated Fire Conditions

Winds are expected to increase in Santa Clarita throughout the week with Santa Ana conditions expected by the weekend.

By Wednesday, winds in the Santa Clarita Valley are expected to increase, bringing elevated fire conditions to the area, said Rose Schoenfeld, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

Officials are predicting moderate to strong winds out of the northwest, shifting to the northeast Thursday through Friday, according to Schoenfeld.

By Wednesday, northwest to north winds are expected, with gusts of up to 25 mph expected through Santa Clarita.

Thursday through Friday are when winds are expected to peak with gusts of 35 to 50 mph, according to officials.

Friday into Saturday, winds are expected to shift, bringing dry desert air over the region.

Northeast winds, known as Santa Ana winds or off-shore winds, are expected Friday night through Saturday, bringing elevated fire conditions to the area.

“The Santa Ana winds are looking to be pretty light to moderate,” Schoenfeld said.

As of Tuesday, the NWS has not issued a red flag warning for Santa Clarita. However, they are in close communications with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and could issue a red flag warning later into the week once they have a better understanding of how severe the Santa Ana event will be, Schoenfeld said.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
