Dodgers Clinch Eighth Consecutive NL West Title

The Los Angeles Dodgers (39-17) clinched their eighth consecutive National League West title on Tuesday with a 7-2 win over the Oakland Athletics (34-21).

In the first of their current three-game home series with the A’s, the Dodgers traded blows early but took over in the middle innings and never looked back on their way to clinching another division title for the franchise.

Dustin May got the start and gave up only two runs in five innings pitched, one on a home run to Robbie Grossman in the first and another on a wild pitch that let Sean Murphy trot home in the top of the third.

The Dodgers responded to each of the scores with one of their own in turn, Corey Seager had an RBI single to bring in Mookie Betts in the first and Max Muncy brought Seager home in the third with a two-run homer to center field.

The A’s wouldn’t score again the rest of the night as the Dodgers bullpen handled their business and the Dodgers tacked on four more runs over the next four innings, including solo home runs for Chris Taylor, A.J. Pollock and Corey Seager, on their way to the game’s final score of 7-2.

Perhaps the big win left a bit of a hangover, as the Dodgers followed up their division-clinching win with a 6-4 loss to the A’s in the second game of the matchup.

The Dodgers certainly battled all night after Oakland took advantage with three runs in the game’s opening inning.

In the bottom of the third inning the Dodgers finally managed to put points on the board with a two-run homer to right field from Max Muncy to close Oakland’s lead to 3-2.

Oakland finally managed to tack on another run in the seventh but Cody Bellinger responded in the bottom of the inning with a home run to right field to maintain the gap at a single run, 4-3.

After playing from behind all night, the Dodgers tied the game up 4-4 in the eighth with another home run to right field, this time from Edwin Ríos, but ultimately, the A’s had the last laugh.

In the top of the ninth with a runner on second, Ramón Laureano swatted a go-ahead, two-run home run to left field off of reliever Blake Treinen for a 6-4 Oakland lead.

The Dodgers failed to rally in the bottom of the inning and took the loss to even up the three-game series 1-1.

They’ll have a chance to bounce back and prevent their first series loss of the 2020 regular season in their final matchup with Oakland at home on Thursday at 6:40 p.m.
