Dodgers Clinch National League West For Ninth Time In Ten Years

With their 4-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers punched their ticket to the postseason and re-claimed the division crown.

The Dodgers entered this season with high expectations. To say they’ve achieved them would be an understatement.

With their victory Tuesday night over the Diamondbacks, the Dodgers officially clinched the National League (NL) West division title, their ninth time doing so in the last 10 years, and in impressive fashion.

Completing their 141st game of the season, this is the earliest in franchise history that the Dodgers have clinched their division, after leading the San Diego Padres by 20 or more games for a majority of the last month.

“Obviously when you start in spring training, start the season, you know you have a talented roster. But looking into the season- we weren’t the defending NL West champions,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after his team’s 4-0 victory over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. “So that was first on our list- to get the division back in Los Angeles.”

Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw who’s been a part of all of the Dodgers’ division titles during this span continues to pitch at a high level even into his 14th career season. Kershaw limited the Diamondbacks to just two hits and one walk while striking out five in front of 21,000 fans that appeared to feature far more Dodger blue in the stands than crimson red.

The Dodgers now sit at 98 wins with still 21 games remaining in the regular season. The team has a chance to break its single-season win record of 106 wins, set in both 2019 and 2021.

The Dodgers are also likely to clinch the first seed in the National League playoffs, a distinction that under the newly reformatted MLB playoff system will award them a first round playoff bye in addition to home field advantage throughout the postseason.

But the team and their manager know that while records are great, the ultimate goal is to win the World Series.

“It’s something we should enjoy and be proud of, and get back to work (Wednesday), but it’s quite the accomplishment,” Roberts said.

The Dodgers will continue their series with the Diamondbacks Wednesday at Chase Field. The team has not yet announced a starter as they take on Arizona starting pitcher Zach Davies with first pitch set for 6:40 p.m. PDT.
