Dodgers Prepare To Face Padres In NLDS

The Los Angeles Dodgers are slated to face off with the San Diego Padres in the National League Divisional Series (NLDS) beginning Tuesday after they recently completed a two-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wildcard round.

The two division rivals met ten times over the course of the shortened 2020 regular season and the Dodgers managed to get the best of the Padres, winning six of the ten matchups.

Both teams competed well against each other over the course of the season, but the Dodgers averaged slightly more runs in the matchup at 4.8 per game to the Padres’ 3.6 per game.

While the Padres had struggled in the National League West since 2015, failing to finish higher than fourth place in the division, 2020 was a coming out party for the new look team which has found a certain swagger with the arrival of 21-year-old phenom Fernando Tatís Jr.

His performance this year has vaulted Tatís into the conversation for National League MVP, but the Dodgers have an MVP-caliber player of their own that the Padres have to get past in Mookie Betts.

Another wrinkle to the matchup comes from the Padres second-best player, Manny Machado, who played with the Dodgers in 2018 after he was traded by the Baltimore Orioles.

Machado went on to sign a 10-year $300 million contract with the Padres that offseason, but his exit from the team was met with little fanfare, as some fans criticized what they perceived as a lack of hustle in the 2018 World Series against the Boston Red Sox.

Fuel was only added to the fire when during a matchup with L.A. in 2019 a Dodger fan seated near the on-deck circle heckled Machado saying he would “have the next ten October’s off,” in reference to the length of his contract and missing the postseason, to which Machado jokingly responded that he’d bet his contract the Padres would win a World Series before the Dodgers.

The exchange did end on a more positive note, as the fan told Machado he loved him in Dodger Blue, to which Machado responded, “So did I.”

Despite this, fans haven’t forgotten the joking wager adding a layer to the budding rivalry.

The Dodgers are scheduled to face off with the Padres in Game 1 of the NLDS on Tuesday at 6:38 p.m. in Arlington, Texas as part of the modified 2020 playoffs.

Walker Buehler was announced as the Dodgers starting pitcher for Game 1 and Clayton Kershaw is slated to start Game 2.
