A Hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego has led Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials to recently confirm three cases of the disease, including a food handler from Lancaster who was infected in San Diego.

Following the first two cases in mid-July, also from the San Diego area, the Department of Public Health issued a health advisory describing prevention recommendations.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is now requiring the Department of Public Health to report back within 14 days on current efforts to prevent a Hepatitis A outbreak in Los Angeles County.
Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver and is transmitted by close personal and fecal exposure, often through food or water, according to officials.
In the past, outbreaks have occurred when a food handler with poor hygiene contaminates food. As of now, a Hepatitis A outbreak is taking place in the San Diego County, most cases among the homeless and drug-using populations.
On September 1, the third case was identified in a food handler in Lancaster.

All customers who came in contact with them are being informed to take precautionary measures. After being exposed to the infection, it is recommended to receive a vaccination or immunoglobulin given within two weeks prevents illness.
The report requested by the Board of Supervisors should include public awareness, education and a response plan in the event the County sees an increase in cases.
At this time, Public Health does not consider there to be a Hepatitis A outbreak in Los Angeles County.
