The elementary school was taken off lockdown shortly before 1 p.m. on Monday.
The lockdown was a result of a suspended sixth grader allegedly making an unspecified threat over social media, said Shirley Miller, public information officer for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The 11-year-old boy was suspended last week for bringing a knife to school, and over the weekend made a threat on Instagram that was “not specific. (The threat) did not mention the school’s name or any students,” said Miller.
However, she believed the threat is not credible, and the lockdown is only a precaution.
Detectives with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station “located the sixth grader and took him into custody,” Miller said, which prompted the school being taken off lockdown.
“The student (who allegedly made the threat was) not on campus and (was) quite a distance away, about an hour and a half,” said Paul Cordeiro, superintendent of the Newhall School District.
The charges the boy faces are “related to the incident that occurred at the school last week,” said Miller. “He is not being charged with anything that went out over social media, it was a non specific statement and it did not target anyone.”
The name or location of the student could not be disclosed by Miller because the boy is a juvenile.
“School safety is a top priority for our schools in Santa Clarita. Every school has a safety protocol for incidents, both small and large,” said Miller in a Facebook post. “Even though, as in this case, it is a non-credible threat, we still have certain measures that we take to ensure students’ safety. No matter how small, we have to address each situation in a proactive manner. When you hear that a lockdown is in place at one of our area schools, that is your reassurance that we do have safety protocols in place. Keeping your children safe at school is the top priority.”
Miller said it is the school administrator’s decision to place the school on lockdown.
The elementary school is located at 21501 Deputy Jake Drive in Newhall.
