“Most people aren’t ready for that middle-of-the-night phone call from their loved one from jail,” said Inessa Chavez, vice president of All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita. “Familiarizing yourself with the process before something happens can help if you do find yourself in that stressful situation someday.”

An arrestee has a few options in order to be released from jail, with the primary options being to post 100 percent of the bail amount in cash with the court (called a cash bond) or undertaking bail through a bail bonding company (called a surety bond).

“Depending on the charges, bail can be anywhere from a few thousand dollars to a few hundred thousand,” Chavez said. “Most people don’t have that kind of cash lying around, so the best option is usually to choose a surety bond.”

With a surety bond, only 10 percent of the total bail amount — called the premium — is paid to a bail bonding company like All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita.

“If you can’t afford to pay the entire premium upfront, we do have payment plans for those who qualify,” Chavez said. “We understand that every person’s financial situation is different, and will help you figure out the most affordable option for you.”

The company’s bail agent will explain the process and post the bond, ensuring the defendant is released from jail within hours.

“After a bail agent posts the bond, the defendant must be present for all court appearances and meet any other conditions set in the contract,” Chavez said. “Whether the defendant is found innocent or guilty, the bond is exonerated when the trial is over and all conditions are met.”
