“Arrests are definitely not as glamorous as Hollywood portrays them to be,” said Inessa Chavez, vice president of All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita. “Our law enforcement officers have several steps to through.”

In the state of California, after an arrest is made, the suspect is then taken to the local law enforcements station, such as the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station for processing and booking. Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies have released the crime reports for the week of May 11-17.

“The booking process can take a short amount of time or a long amount of time depending on where the arrest was made and where the person is being booked,” Chavez said, adding that All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita has a variety of locations across the state.

A smaller station, like the SCV Sheriff’s Station, can take about 4-6 hours for processing while a larger jail like, Men’s Central Jail can take up to 24 hours.

The law enforcement officials will then search the detainee for weapons and drugs. Their belongings will then be cataloged and stored.

Fingerprinting, a background check, checking for warrants and computer processing are all part of the booking process.

A defendant is then given the opportunity to make a phone call. Many call bail bonds agencies, like All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita, or their family.

“We try to ge the defendant out of jail as soon as possible so they can be with their family,” Chavez said. “We often work day and night to make sure the defendant is free.”

The process then continues into the courts where the bail will be set at the preliminary hearing.

More information about the court process can be found here.
