The Master’s College Women’s Soccer Team Loses For First Time This Season

khts_sportsThe Master’s College women’s soccer team lost for the first time this season, 1-0, to Azusa Pacific.

Azusa Pacific’s Natalie Sun scored in the ninth minute and her teammates shut out The Master’s College, the fourth-ranked team in the NAIA.

Azusa Pacific, the No. 2 team in the NAIA, improved to 10-0-2 and 5-0-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

The Master’s College is 12-1-1 overall and 5-1 in conference.

The Hart girls golf team is out front after the first day of the Newhall Land Cup at the TPC in Valencia. The Newhall Cup is a two-day tournament that also doubles as rounds five and six of the Foothill League schedule.

Hart’s Brenna Carlson shot the low round of the match with a 1-under par 35.

Valencia’s Alison Lee, the reigning Newhall Land Cup champion and the Foothill League MVP from last season, is second after the first day of play. She is three shots behind Carlson and shot a 2-over par, 38.

The top-seven golfers in the Foothill League standings earn spots in the CIF postseason tournaments. The top-three teams also earn spots in the CIF playoffs. Hart has a commanding lead in the Foothill League standings. Saugus is in second place and has a slight seven-stroke lead over Valencia. West Ranch is in fourth place, 12 strokes behind Valencia for the third and final playoff spot.

In high school volleyball, the Saugus girls beat Hart in five games. Saugus setter Ashley Guthrie had 40 assists and 11 digs. Teammate Jaclyn Clark had 18 kills and Sarah Blomgren had 17 kills.

The West Ranch girls beat Golden Valley in three games. Bree Baucher had a match-high 11 kills for West Ranch. Golden Valley’s Sam Holcombe had six kills and six digs.

The Trinity Classical Academy girls lost in five games to Hillcrest Christian. Karli Klar had 13 kills and seven aces for Trinity.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls beat AGBU in three games. Shannon Houchin had eight kills and five blocks for Santa Clarita Christian.

In the American League Division Series, the Texas Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-1, to advance to the championship series.

Rangers starter Cliff Lee pitched a six-hitter, striking out 11, and has his team positioned for its first World Series appearance.

Ian Kinsler hit a two-run home run to ice the game for the Rangers in the ninth inning. Vladamir Guerrero was 1-for-4 and scored a run for the Rangers.

To get to the World Series, the Rangers have to beat the New York Yankees, the reigning World Series champions. Good luck with that.

In hockey, the Kings won the home opener, 3-1, over the Atlanta Thrashers. The Kings scored three goals in the third period and erased a 1-0 deficit.

Ryan Smyth scored two goals and had an assist.

The Kings host the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night at Staples Center.
