Carl Goldman is continuing to recover from the coronavirus, COVID-19, as Jeri Seratti-Goldman prepares to return to Santa Clarita with a clean bill of health, testing negative for the virus.
Back In The States With The Coronavirus – Day 26 (Sunday)
My wife, Jeri, will be released from quarantine Monday. Hallelujah. She never caught the coronavirus, COVID-19.
I will remain quarantined at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha until I test negative three times in a row, 24 hours apart. My release is now up to my body.
Our friend, Mark Jorgensen, was moved once again. Just before his release from quarantine at Travis Air Force base, he tested positive for the virus. He was moved to a hospital near the base in Fairfield, California.
The next night, Mark was moved to Johnny Cash country, to a hospital in Folsom, California. The next night, they moved Mark once again, flying him to a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. I believe Mark had neglected to ask for asylum in California.
A second death from the coronavirus was reported from the same nursing home in Washington. The virus continues to spread. My cough remains. It gets worse as the day progresses. It disappears throughout the night and returns about two hours after I wake up. Other than my cough, I feel fine.
Today was a sad day in our family. Jeri’s younger brother, Greg Seratti, died in late December. He was only 57. His memorial in San Diego was planned for today. We planned it before we left for Japan on Jan. 17. When our quarantine began, Jeri’s older brother, Tom, and younger sister, Karen, asked if we wanted to move the date. We told them, no. We can celebrate Greg’s life from our quarantined rooms.
The news on television makes things sound like the grim reaper has permeated the planet. Granted, we’ve had six deaths from passengers on our ship, the Diamond Princess, and two deaths now in the States. It’s tragic. However, most of us have had very mild reactions to the virus. For me, it was the high fever that almost instantly jumped to 103 two hours into our flight from Tokyo back to America and my dry cough that persists.
If I wasn’t contagious, I would have been back at work 48 hours after the virus hit.
The other day I wrote about what, at the time, was the funniest cruise experience I heard before the start of our Diamond Princess saga. It involved former Los Angeles Dodger players Rick Monday and Steve Yeager on a celebrity cruise to Jamaica. Monday went on shore and learned Yeager had been traded to Seattle while they were on the cruise. Monday had to hurry back to the ship to give the news to his buddy.
The next day after posting that story, our good friend, Sharon Bronson, was at a luncheon in Chatsworth, California. Steve Yeager was the featured guest. She informed Yeager his “being traded” story was featured in my daily update from the bio-containment unit in Nebraska. What??? Steve Yeager sends me his well wishes.

Today I heard a report that 80 percent of the ingredients in our pharmaceuticals are manufactured in either China or India. We need to become more vigilant and bring a large portion of that manufacturing back to the States.
Our one online hater continues to “troll” us, making nasty threats. We now are bringing the authorities in to get him to stop. It’s a sad state of our times. It has dampened our sense of humor.
I can see my sense of humor is becoming contagious. A reader wrote a whole slew of funny coronavirus songs, taking the lead from my idea, which I later discovered was not original, of converting the Knack’s “My Sharona” to “My Corona.” She suggested the Beatles’, “I Want To Hold Your Hand” might get banned by the CDC as inadvisable.
She also reminded me that in Foreigners smash, “Hot Blooded,” their fever hit a 103, the same as mine at its peak.
I laughed when Randy Burzynski, the owner of Fastframe Valencia, sent me a picture of a guy who could be an aging member of the Grateful Dead. He has a mask wrapped around his gray beard. In place of the mask’s front, he’s protected by a 2003 Norton anti-virus disk. That guy has my sense of humor.
As I turn out my light, I am thankful for my health and pray the outbreak of the novel corona virus remains limited in the United States.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
- Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

Good luck Carl! Hope you can get out of there soon. I’ve binge-read your entire series and look forward to your last quarantine post. 🙂
Same here!! Get better soon!!!
I hope that you soon start testing negative for the virus, but I do admit that I will miss reading your updates. They are factual, personal, serious and funny all at the same time. Hope you are home soon to your well-vacuumed house!
72 hours and counting. It will be good to have you back in the saddle again…
Love the song idea! I’ve been playing around with Sweet Carolin by Neil Diamond. “CoVid- -19 . You really surprised me. I was informed, that you infected me e e. ?
By the way, love the radio station. It is my go to for every emergency we have had in Canyon Country.
Hope your cough clears up very very soon.
Love the idea of playing with the songs. I’ve been singing Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond for a few weeks.
“Co Vid -19. You really surprised me. I wish to go, Go back to not worrying ing ing?
Maybe your version makes me sense “CoVID -19. You really infected me. I was informed. On my way back to SCV vvv”
Hope your cough goes away real real soon
By the way, love my hometown radio station. You guys are THE ones I turn to whenever Canyon County catches on fire?which we seem to be doing a lot.
Early parole most likely will not be granted. Keep your spirit in a good place
Thank you for maintaining humor during this ordeal. I’ve been following you and Jerri since you were on the ship. I have no idea why someone would troll and be mean spirited. The world has so many good people and then there’s a BAD one every now and then that just suck the energy out of the air.
Hope you get to join your wife soon.
Thank you for your updates…praying for a clear swab for YOU!
Continued prayers for strength and healing. Keep your chin up!
I read your updates Daily! They are so much more real, then what the media is reporting. You are living the situation, they are only observing the situation. We all know Observations can be so subjective. Thank you for your constant updates and Great sense of humor! Hurry Home!
Hi Carl,
As usual your updates continue to inspire me with how you are coping with the situation you have been dealt. Keep working on those songs.
How did Jeri’s reintegration back into SCV go yesterday? Hope she is doing well.
Wishing you continued health! Reading your blog is so informative and entertaining – please keep blogging – it is so helpful to us that are worried during these uncertain times….
So how many days total have you tested positive for
The virus- day on plane to now? I can’t tell if it’s 26 days with the virus or 26 days in quarantine (boat and States).
It seems to be a very long time to have a virus…giving me anxiety.
Thanks for the common sense recommendations to purchase a digital thermometer for each person in the house. I went to our local big box store the other day to buy pain meds and the isle was nearly empty. People are taking the advise of the CDC seriously and stocking up on items you would not want to go get when you are sick. Hope you test negative 3 times in row soon so you can end this ordeal and get back to your life. Peace
Keep healing and keep these great updates going. So sorry about the Troll. Glad that Jeri got to go home.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. Your account of the ordeal is helpful, because it answers so many questions we all have. From your blog, we can understand exactly what happens during a quarantine, as well as learn how the disease presents itself and progresses. After learning of the first two cases in my state today, finding a shortage of supplies, while being told not to panic, my worries were somewhat allayed by your first-hand account of a worst-case scenario. I hope you will soon test negative and be reunited with your wife. Best wishes to you both!!
You are amazing! You are brave and strong!! I’m inspired by your strength. I know you will beat this and come home soon. Prayers to you and tour family.
