Living With Coronavirus: Santa Clarita Resident Continues To Share Story — Part 10

Carl Goldman, owner of KHTS Radio, is continuing to share his first-hand account of living with the coronavirus, after contracting COVID-19 after the Diamond Princess cruise.

Back In The States With The Coronavirus – Day 16 (Thursday)

My fever returned tonight. I am bummed. It is low-grade 99.7, but it lingers. My medical team is giving me Ibuprofen along with more Gatorade. My doctor does not want me to take Tylenol. Tylenol’s active ingredient is Acetaminophen, not Ibuprofen. Aspirin, Advil and a potpourri of other over-the-counter medications all use Ibuprofen.

I’m told taking Tylenol may be counterproductive to the virus. It’s yet another tidbit of information for me to store in case I ever become a contestant on Jeopardy.

I am recovering from the coronavirus, COVID-19 in the biocontainment wing at Nebraska Med in Omaha.

My wife, Jeri is quarantined about three blocks away. She doesn’t have the virus. Fingers crossed, she’ll be able to fly back to our home in Santa Clarita, California on March 3.

The four amigos are in separate quarantines in different parts of the world. Our vacation aboard the Diamond Princess began when the four of us flew from LAX to Tokyo on January 17 over one month ago.

Jerri Jorgensen and I have the virus. Mark Jorgensen and my wife Jeri do not. It is totally random. Jerri Jorgensen is in a hospital in Fukushima, Japan. Her husband Mark is quarantined at Travis Air Force, outside Sacramento, California. Jeri and I are in Omaha, Nebraska.

Our release criteria for heading home constantly shifts. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has told both me and Jerri Jorgensen we can leave once all our symptoms of the coronavirus, COVID-19 disappear. We then get retested. If our test is negative, we are tested again a minimum of 24-hours later.

If that second test is also negative, we are free to go home.  It is possible for Jerri and me, who both have the virus, to return home faster than my wife and Mark. The two of them must remain quarantined for 14-days. When we all escape our quarantine, we are assured we will not be contagious. The CDC will not risk any chance of infecting others.

Jerri Jorgensen, who has just a wee bit of a competitive streak suggested we race to see who gets home first. We could call it “The Great Quarantine Race.” I’ll work on getting it optioned on Netflix for next season.

I continue to recoup, draining my many bottles of Gatorade, the only cure for the virus. My friend, Paul Strickland, Sr. sent me a picture of him at the grocery store checkout line with his stash of Gatorade.

Rumor has it there might be a run on Gatorade throughout Santa Clarita. I better shoot an email to Bobette Laureno, store manager at our Canyon Country Costco. If our Costco runs out of Gatorade, it could trigger the first riot in our tranquil valley since Rodney King. Someday I’ll share that story.

Jeri and I are receiving so many well wishes. Support on Facebook, emails, texts and comments my previous articles have kept our spirits high. Your thoughts, prayers and love are much appreciated.

On Tuesday, the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce held their monthly business mixer. Toni Polucki made us laugh when she texted videos of well-wishes from friends. I’ll share two of those, one from Santa Clarita City Council candidate, Jason Gibbs. The other features realtors Dennis and Pamela Verner along with Kris Hough who works for our State Senator, Scott Wilk.

I continue to have my cough, which has now moved into my chest. It’s my usual routine as I cycle through a cold. My medical team continues to enter my bio-containment hospital room wearing hazmat suits. They are always cheery and smiling even though I know they cannot be comfortable as they maneuver in those hot, awkward suits.

The only time I see their smiles sag a bit is when they eye my Michigan sweatshirt. I believe they are conspiring to replace it with a Cornhuskers shirt. They take their sports seriously here in Nebraska.

If my suspicions are correct, I will wear my new shirt proudly. Omaha has reached a new level of awesomeness in my world.

National news is reporting over 600 cases of the novel corona virus have broken out on board the Diamond Princess. That represents a majority of all the outbreaks of the virus throughout the world outside of China. It’s easy to play Monday morning quarterback and say it was a mistake to keep us on board.

It is not the fault of Princess Cruises. They are also a victim. They were under strict orders from the Japanese Ministry. It was clear the Japanese did not want any of us touching Japanese soil. They allowed the Diamond Princess to become a giant floating petri dish.

I am treasuring my independence, savoring my total control of the television remote in my Omaha hospital room. It’s a first in my 31-year relationship with my wife Jeri.

From Labor Day through Christmas, Jeri becomes addicted to the Hallmark channel. It’s her way of unwinding at night after a hectic day at KHTS. Football season and the World Series happen to collide. I am watching in another room. Hallmark trumps our primary remote control.

I’m baffled with the appeal of Hallmark. Every one, and I mean every one, of their quaint movies have the exact same plot. Just the actors and setting change. My wife hates it when I give away the plot as she starts her next Hallmark Christmas movie. Put in a strong transgender character or a 21st Century version of the actor, Boris Karloff and I might catch an episode or two.

A few days before we departed for Tokyo, weeks after Christmas, I drove to our local Spectrum Cable office. I upgraded the receiver in our bedroom, not realizing our old receiver still contained a few recorded, unwatched Hallmark Christmas movies.

My wife was furious. I stupidly told her I could reveal the entire plot of the shows she would now forever miss. That was a big mistake.

I’m beginning to master the unhooking of all my monitoring devices. I’m walking to the bathroom on my own. I no longer require my medical team to unhook me wearing their hazmat outfits and three layers of gloves.

I take advantage of my bathroom trips to pace my room. My goal is 3,000 steps a day. I am well over 3,500 by late in the evening.

It’s when I return to bed that my trouble begins. I’ve learned how to reattach the monitors following the 14-pages of instructions. However, I create such a tangled mess. I’m totally tied up in cords, trapped. Spiderman would be envious.

My bathroom is about ten steps from my bed. I’m thankful there is no line. There were only two toilets on our ten-hour cargo 747 plane flight from Tokyo to Omaha. We had lines to those two toilets of no less than 50 passengers at any time. I’ll spare any description of the bathrooms toward the end of our flight.

As I prepared for bed, my fever returned as described at the start of today’s journal. My coughing spells increased. My fatigue as well. I felt my recovery had reversed itself ever so slightly.

Jeri is doing fine, making it through another day without showing any sign of picking up the virus. She is fortunate. 11 of the 13 passengers from the Diamond Princess healing in Omaha have the coronavirus, COVID-19.

Jeri is thankful for her health although I sense she is getting a little cranky in her solitary quarantine. Give her our missing luggage, a good night’s sleep and plug in the Hallmark Christmas Channel. She will once again become a happy camper.

  1. I am sorry to hear your fever returned. I pray that this will be the last time. I’m with Jeri on the Hallmark Channel! We start recording in July and continue watching past Christmas. It is a very pleasant diversion from the usual genre on television. Enjoy your remote time!

  2. You’re a great trooper Carl. Jeri too.

  3. Keeping you and Jeri in our thoughts and prayers! Glad to hear things are fairly stable. Hope it says that way and both of you are home, safe and sound, very soon. By the way, since you have plenty of time on your hands, Carl, and your medical team is letting you unplug and re-plug your monitor leads yourself, consider the fun of switching up the cables to compose a complete, custom symphony of alarm sounds on all your medical equipment. Who knows, Siemens might send you a grant for developing new uses for their products. Best wishes!

  4. Carl. Thank you for your updates. I am sorry your fever came back. Think if you and Jeri. Sending prayers and hope you both can return home soon. Sending best wishes to you and Jeri.

  5. Carl, thank you for your updates. I’ve been following along on your journey and I’m so impressed with your positivity and humor. I’ve attached a link about the first case in the US that we had here in my state of WA. I’m surprised after reading what they gave him that they aren’t giving the same to you guys. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2001191

  6. I love your sense of humor, Carl. Stay strong ! ((((((HUGS)))))) &. Prayers for you and Jeri. ❤️?❤️?

  7. I hope you can update us all with info about whether or not they’re perfoming CT lung scans or any other tests and the progression of the virus as information currently being released seems to be so vague and dire. There’s so much disinformation floating around the net regarding this virus and these reports are extremely important, assuming they’re not being censored. I’m particularly interested in what the doctors might have to say about antibodies and supposed reinfection.

  8. I found your blog by accident and am enjoying it immensely. Keep up your spirits. Drink your Gatorade. (What’s your favorite flavor? They have more than orange and green, now. Drink the rainbow!)

Tell Jerri she is not alone in her love of the Hallmark Channel, and to hold the remote close. You’re missing the point. It’s not the destination, it’s the journey! Yes, you know the ending, but you don’t know the hows and the whys of getting there–that’s different for each story. (P.S. I write romance.)

Kind of like having a cold (or the Corona virus). You know you’ll feel better in the end, but it’s the nuances of each day (stuffy head, today…cough settling in the chest…what the heck did I just cough up? Eww!) that keep it interesting. 😉

Wishing you a short and easy recuperation. Stay strong, and keep writing. 🙂 GET WELL SOON!

  9. Carl, You’re doing such a great job documenting your story. What an ordeal! I’m praying that you and Jeri will be able to return home soon and in the best of health.

  10. Carl, please drink Gatorade Zero. The sugar in regular Gatorade has high sugar — sugar will lower the immune system. Check out monolaurin supplement. It potentially knocks out viruses. Praying for you!!

  11. PS Keto K1000 is a wonderful replenishing and rehydrating electrolyte powder you add to your water.

  12. Thank you guys for keeping us updated! Well wishes to you and yours, stay strong and keep your mind occupied, read a lot, stay the course and everything will be alright. We are praying for you guys from California.

  13. Thank you for your upbeat updates! You will all be home soon! I know how those hazmat suits feel from my work at Henry Mayo. God bless you and those nurses and medical staff.

  14. I too, am a Hallmark fan. I have my favorite actors and movies. Jeri and I would get along great. The thing with these movies is that you don’t have to think. You get caught up in the fantasy and is very relaxing. My husband doesn’t get it either, but he rarely watches tv. Sorry about the fever. I’m glad that there is an end in sight for both of you.

  15. My daughter-in-law works for the Hallmark Channel. let me know what we can do to help Jeri out with her Christmas fix. Best to you Carl and happy birthday.

  16. Your humor is amazing! Keep it up! I have read all of your reports of your experiences onboard the Diamond Princess, your cargo plane ride back to the USA, and your hospital stay in Omaha. Prayers that all four of you return home to our SCV quickly. By the way, my husband is only allowed to record the Hallmark channel movies for me. No deleting! I too am addicted to them and agree with the others that while they are slightly “predictable” they are entertaining and just what we should be enjoying during the evening to wind down after a long day! Take care of yourself! Drink your Gatorade! No more fevers! Come home! God bless!

  17. Prayers continue for you & Jeri, and Jerri & Mark, with love from your Hometown Team
at Prayer Angels for the Military. Inc. God Bless you all!

  18. I pray and believe that the promises of our Lord Jesus are upon you and one of them is that by His stripes we were healed. So I pray for wholeness and full restoration in Spirit soul and body , I pray Angel’s surround you and all who are facing this trying times , but above all I pray and believe for perseverance as all of us pull together with prayers and stand in faith on your behalf. Just as the story of the man who was lowered through the roof we too are bringing you up through prayers and petitions to our Lord who is our forever intercesor. God bless you and hope to meet when you get back.

  19. Carl, you are a great storyteller and humorist. Your positivity is fantastic. Wishing you continued healing. I spend time every other week in the Santa Clarita valley. It’s a really nice area. I hope you get home soon.

  20. Carl & Jeri
An extended vacation would be a wonderful reward under different circumstances.
Hoping your recovery is full and complete.
Loving life in Cottage Grove Oregon☺
    Ken W.

  21. Carl,
Thank you for this blog as it has been a window into a fascinating process. And I’ve added to my movie list! (Need to check out Hallmark!)
I hope you are feeling better and I look forward to the entry that reports you and Jeri, and Mark and Jerri are all home!
    Jenny Las

  22. Your blog posts are amazing!! I hope that knowing you are informing and helping so many back home gives you a little comfort. The Gatorade and the Advil information is really helpful – please continue to post real information that we can actually use.
    Sending best wishes!!!!!

About Carl Goldman

Carl Goldman, along with his wife, Jeri repurchased KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita’s hometown station on October 24, 2003. They owned it from 1990-1998, and then sold it to Clear Channel Communication in 1998, buying it back from Clear Channel in 2003. Since then, they have rebuilt KHTS as a critical voice of the Valley. In 2015 the radio station moved to its new headquarters on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, in the original Newhall Hardware building. In 2018 an FM was added, 98.1, with its signal being simulcast with AM-1220. In January 2020, Carl and Jeri cruised on the Diamond Princess. Carl was one of the first Americans to come down with Covid-19. Months earlier he was impacted by Guillain Barre Syndrome as a result of a Shingles vaccine in September 2019. He is still in recovery from the vaccine.
