Learning how to drive can be one of the scariest experiences you can go through. Getting into a vehicle without knowing how to properly operate it isn’t something easy to do, especially when the person teaching you doesn’t understand that. The last thing you want to do when you’re driving a car for the first time is to feel stressed out even more by the person sitting next to you. So what are you supposed to do when you attend your first driving lesson?
- The environment around you
Feeling that you’re constantly at risk of something going wrong is natural when it’s your first time driving. If the feeling continues to stay, even after the presence of your driving instructor has set in, then there’s definitely something wrong. Factors like feeling unsafe and uncomfortable affect your capability to drive greatly. It’s important to find yourself a driving school that is well known in your area. A good example of this is people from the city of Manchester in the UK keep each other well informed. As a result, driving lessons Manchester locals have access to are always up to standard resulting in less road accidents within the community. This is why it’s crucial that the driving school and the instructor you sign up with is one that is well known. This will give you that extra sense of security. You generally want to feel comfortable and safe when first learning how to drive, and if that’s achieved by changing the instructor or the car, or even the driving school altogether, then you might have to look at if those other options are available.
- The learning pace
A critical point that a lot of new drivers face is that they go for driving lessons where they feel super comfortable with the driver, but the learning pace is too slow or vice versa. If you end up learning very little in a very long amount of time when you’re clearly capable of learning more, then you should probably inform your instructor of that. It’s usually up to them to decide when you’re going to move on to the next part of the lesson, but you can’t spend the entire course learning just one thing when you already feel comfortable doing it.
The same can be said about instructors that make you learn things you’re still not comfortable enough to do. You can’t just drive on a highway without the proper preparation. It can be either very overwhelming or underwhelming, you just need to vocalize it to your instructor. If the instructor doesn’t listen to your criticism or doesn’t offer a logical explanation to why he/she is going with that particular pace, then you might be better off with another instructor that won’t make you feel like you’re either wasting your money or feeling like you’re in harm’s way.
- The credentials and location
It’s really essential to feel like your instructor knows what he/she is doing before stepping into a car with them. Checking for certifications and reviews either encourages you or discourages you from going to a specific person to teach you how to drive. Then there’s also the location of wherever the driving lessons are. You can’t simply venture a long distance every single time you have a lesson. You want to experience driving for the first time in a comfortable setting, and what’s more comfortable than doing so in the streets that you already know?

If you’re going to take driving lessons with an instructor for an hour a week, you should probably make sure you like them. Whether or not you like your driving instructor will make the difference between you enjoying yourself and looking forward to every lesson, or dreading that time of the week where you spend time learning from someone you’re not too fond of. It really affects your ability to learn and it’s an aspect that shouldn’t be looked over, even if they have all the qualifications in the world.
