A Santa Clarita pest control expert is answering a common question among homeowners and business owners alike: is organic pest control really better, for people and the environment?

Cardon Ellis of Unipest noted the answer to this question really depends on the specific situation, the organic product in question and a person’s individual reaction to these products.

“Organic is a very interesting word,” he said. “There are some organic compounds that are good, but oftentimes will actually do more damage in rivers and in certain settings where you wouldn’t want to use them.”

It’s not uncommon for a person to be allergic to certain organic products as well, according to Ellis.

“Women that wear makeup will know this, that if you’re allergic to a certain organic compound that’s found in natural mineral makeup, your face is going to swell up,” Ellis explained. “So in that case, you actually need synthesized compounds literally for your own safety.”

Similarly, if a parent discovers a severe pest problem that could jeopardize their child’s health or a business owner discovers an infestation and needs to be open to the public the next day, a more powerful chemical may be necessary, according to Ellis.

On top of that, you can get a dedicated mosquito repellent for yards that are more efficient in open spaces. In this way, you can have more quality time in your own backyard.

“When you’re dealing with the safety of your children, you also don’t want to mess around,” Ellis said. “Or if a restaurant has been shut down by the Health Department, you don’t want to be squirting diatomaceous earth in the corner hoping that 28 days later it slowly works — we need to open tomorrow.”

With all these factors in mind, Ellis noted that the Santa Clarita pest control experts at Unipest can make recommendations based on the best products available for the unique circumstances at hand.

“Sometimes synthesized pesticides are better, and then other times there are synthesized pesticides that are just unnecessary,” Ellis said. “So usually what my statement is, is instead of saying, ‘Oh, we go all organic,’ I just say, ‘We use the most natural, lowest impact (products) possible.”
