4 Reasons Why Skateboarding Is A Good Summer Exercise

People have different takes on what it means to exercise. For some, it is hitting the gym and lifting weights for two hours that counts as a good solid workout. For others, it’s half an hour’s swim in the pool that they need to get their muscles moving. Then there are those who are more into yoga or Pilates, and are more concerned with fitness than muscular strength. While those are all good ways to work up a sweat, they might be a bit tedious. And who said exercise can’t be fun? You might want to consider skateboarding as a good summer exercise. Here is why.

1. A full body workout

You might not believe it by seeing those skaters move up and down the sidewalk, elegantly navigating their way through the people and different obstacles, but skateboarding is actually a full body workout. You use your entire body muscles to move, and this is why skateboarding provides a solid workout. You use your arm, leg, and core muscles –- you will find that skateboarders have excellent core strength, because how else would they seamlessly navigate their way with such control and ease? You even get a great cardio exercise out of skateboarding, and you end up making a lot of effort that is good for your cardiovascular muscles. It seems like an easy activity to do, but there are a lot of control and endurance needed –– especially in your lower body parts –– to steer the board and move so fluidly. So, in a nutshell, skateboarding gives you a thorough and comprehensive full body exercise, and you get to have fun doing it, too!

2. Burning calories

As you might have already guessed it, skateboarding does indeed help you burn a lot of calories. There are even reports by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that explain how skateboarding offers a moderately intense aerobic exercise, which is always great for losing weight and burning those calories. As you can see on Thrill Appeal, the kind of skateboard you choose is very important, and you need to select one that is appropriate for your fitness goals and your skill level. They come in all shapes, sizes, and options, and you should be careful which one you select because it will make a difference in the outcome. Back to the health benefits, you don’t even need to be doing crazy stunts to burn calories; just cruising down the sidewalk does wonders and can help you lose some serious weight.

3. Variety of movements

A very cool feature of skateboarding is the fact that it includes a variety of movements that you can do to get more out of your workout, if you want. Trying to ride uphill is a great way to burn fat and get your blood pumping, and the kicks and pushes you do to get off the ground will definitely get your heart going. The different movements you make will help shape your leg muscles more than you could possibly imagine, which reflects on your body’s overall strength and endurance. This variety of exercise and techniques help your body get into shape, and you will begin losing weight at a very fast rate. The important thing is consistency when it comes to skateboarding –– doing it for 10 minutes a day over the week won’t exactly get you the form you need.

4. It’s fun, and anyone can do it

As we mentioned earlier on, the great thing about skateboarding is the fact that you could have a lot of fun while doing it, unlike many other ways to lose weight and exercise. It even gets better; anybody can do it! You don’t have to be an athlete to try skateboarding, and if you are worried that it might impact your joints or knees, it won’t. Skateboarding has very little impact on your ankles and legs, especially if you are wearing the right pair of shoes. It’s basically the perfect workout for summertime, and it won’t trap you behind closed walls like a gym or a fitness center. You get to be out there enjoying the sun and nature while working a sweat, which is all you could ask for really.

It is important that you take it slowly with skateboarding, though, because easy as it might be, it requires experience and time to get better. You can’t do the complex maneuvers and aerial stunts professional skaters do on your first month. Be patient and go with the flow, and before you know it, you’ll have lost some serious weight and you will be able to do a lot of different moves.
