7 Healthy Hair Habits You Should Adopt

Taking care of your hair is more and more important as you age, but the proper maintenance has to begin early. You have to take the necessary steps to ensure that you are caring for your hair well before signs of damage and hair loss. Here are some healthy hair habits every person should adopt as soon as possible.

Eating With Hair In Mind

Your diet will always have a way to impact your health and your body. Your hair is no exception to this. It is important that you eat enough protein and get enough vitamins throughout the day and with each of your meals, as your hair is fortified and made up of protein. You can do this by incorporating things like fish, eggs, and meats into your diet to satisfy your protein needs, as well as incorporate citrus fruits, leafy greens, and avocados to get the vitamins you need to have healthy and stronger hair.

Regular Hair Cuts

As your hair grows, it is important that you get regular haircuts. This is not just for keeping clean and presentable, but for the health of your hair strands as well. After a few weeks, your hair becomes weaker, often resulting in breakages and split ends that are more likely to get tangled and damaged. To help prevent such damage, you should get your haircut every few weeks or months to ensure that the ends remain strong as they grow.

Don’t Take Hot Showers

One important aspect of haircare is how you treat and clean it. When you bathe and shower, you should consider the temperature of the water. Taking a hot shower might feel great and relaxing, but it can be harmful to both your hair and scalp. When you shower, try to keep the temperature safe and warm, still enjoying your cleansing ritual, but in a way that doesn’t dry out your scalp and promotes healthy hair.

Don’t Shampoo Everyday

In addition to heat and high temperatures, shampooing every day is another hygiene practice that can dry out your scalp. Most shampoos remove the natural oils from your hair that keep them hydrated and healthy-looking, so you should consider changing the products themselves. When you do need to clean your hair, use a volumizing shampoo bar, different conditioners, or other formulas that will prioritize the strengthening and the health of your hair, and not just cleaning properties. It is best to avoid shampooing every day, wearing a shower cap letting those natural oils keep your hair healthy and strong.

Switch To Silk Sheets

One of the biggest causes of damaged hair and hair loss happens when you least expect it. During your sleep, you will often move quite a bit in bed. Your unconscious movements will cause your hair to be moved and pulled in different directions and ways that are not natural to the follicles. To help reduce the damage that can come from such movements, you should outfit your bed with sheets and covers that do not grasp onto your hair as much. Silk sheets are the perfect material to outfit your bed as they won’t grab onto your hair the same way that cotton material does.

Brush Before Bathing

A lot of hair loss can occur in the shower, as you are putting shampoo or condition through your hair and massage and cleaning your scalp. This is because the wet hair gets tangled easily leading to breakage, and you then unknowingly pull strands out. To help prevent your hair from getting caught and tangling in the shower, it is a good idea to give your hair a solid brushing. This will straighten out your hair for easier cleaning. Additionally, brushing has other benefits as it helps distribute and spread the oils out through your hair, and makes it easier to brush or straighten after you finish in the shower.

Be Mindful Of Styling Practices

As previously mentioned, heat can be problematic to hair, causing all sorts of damage and drying out the scalp. This is why it is important to reduce the usage of hairdryers when it comes to your hair. If you can avoid using heat for styling, whether that is drying or even curling, you will be able to preserve your hair’s strength and health. For when you come out of the shower, it is best to allow your hair to dry naturally to keep it healthy as well.

The more you care for your hair, the stronger and healthier it will be. This will be important as you age and learn to prioritize your body and health more. However, if you do not start early with healthy hair habits, it might be too late by the time you start practicing them.
