Do Motivational Speakers Really Help With One’s Well-Being?

When it comes to motivational speakers, a lot of people doubt their ability to affect anyone’s life. It’s hard for people to believe that someone can have such an influence over others. That’s precisely what we’re going to explore, whether or not a keynote can affect a person’s well-being. And if so, then how do they manage to do it. But, before we delve deeper into the techniques of a speaker, it makes more sense to gain a better understanding of what they do.

What is it exactly that a motivational speaker does?

The simple answer is, they show up, they share a simple story from their past, talk about what they learned, and then deliver an inspiring message and people get motivated. To an extent that’s true, but it’s an oversimplification. Of course, it depends on how good a speaker is, but what those people do is that they try to reach a state of emotional or mental connectivity with their audience and then deliver their message.

But, how does this relate to well-being? Here’s a quick example. When you watch a film or a series and connect with the character in a way, whether it is through relating to their pain or empathizing with their emotions, do you not feel a little better after? Now, imagine listening to a real person, just like you, sharing their experiences and a message that they personally live their life by. Sounds interesting enough, right? That’s because we all crave some type of connection and once that’s achieved, it becomes easy to change someone’s state of mind for the better.

That being said, here’s how a motivational speaker uses their newfound bond with their audience to change their state of mind to the better, inspire, and motivate.

They provide relatable experiences

Not all problems are extremely complicated Hollywood script material. Sometimes the most difficult problem a person can face is not being able to accept themselves for who they are. It also happens to be the most common source of depression and anxiety, but like all other common fears, it is always left unmentioned. One thing speakers do is that they bring all those unspoken struggles that we all share as humans to light.

In doing so, they engage the audience in front of them by presenting something familiar. Having their struggles acknowledged and knowing that they’re heard and that they’re fighting the same battle like many others, people find a certain sense of relief. And, not only do they feel relieved, but they also feel hopeful because after presenting their struggle, speakers explain how they got over it.

It is at this moment that listeners start thinking, “if they can do it, I can do it.” And as the speaker draws to a close, after they’ve provided a real-life example of someone who has overcome a notable struggle, they finish up with a drive to make things better and to take their lives to the next level.

They make people laugh

Don’t underestimate the power of humor. We have an amazing ability to instantly connect with someone over a funny incident. And let’s not talk about how many people have gotten a first date because they were able to make a person laugh. The point is, laughter is one of the easiest ways to connect to people and it instantaneously makes people feel good. And when you combine that with a meaningful message, you’ll yield amazing results.

Needless to say, being able to make people laugh is a great way to take people’s focus away from their burdens and give them something else as a distraction. So,  even if they don’t come out with a message, they’ll at least leave feeling generally better. When you’re looking for a keynote speaker for hire – Adam Christing, keep in mind that an outstanding speaker knows how to use humor to emphasize their message, instead of letting humor overshadow what’s truly important. In other words, a pro can use humor to make people feel better in the short term and also as a vehicle to help them improve their long-term well-being.

They put things in perspective and change viewpoints

When thinking about something on your own, more specifically inside your head, it’s easy to lose sight of the real size of the problem. That’s mostly the reason we feel stupid right after sharing an insecurity out loud. The longer it stays in your head, the more it blows up. As we’ve mentioned above, keynote speakers tend to focus on what’s unmentioned. When they do so, and listeners hear them analyzing a problem or a situation, it puts the situation in perspective. It gets people thinking, “why was I afraid of this in the first place?” or “hmm, I guess it’s not as complicated as I thought it was.”

Another thing also related to perspective is how a speaker uses humor to shrink any hardship and change how a person views it. Yet another common thing that we all tend to do is taking life too seriously which amplifies any problem; just like when your toast burns after you’ve just lost your job. Burnt toast isn’t a big deal on its own, but due to the already existing weight of being fired, it gets amplified. Using their sense of humor, a skilled speaker finds the funny side of a tough situation and they show it to people. In minutes, you can find someone laughing at something they were panicking over a week ago, which is quite remarkable.

With the points above in mind, we can confidently say that motivational speakers do make a difference, and they can affect someone’s well-being through a variety of ways. Whether it’s using humor or psychology or their ability to communicate their thoughts, it all goes back to establishing a bond with their listeners. And, that is something motivational speakers know how to do better than anyone. The point is, motivational speakers aren’t magical mind control gurus. They’re just humans who have the knowledge and know how to communicate it.
