Top Colleges In The Los Angeles Area

Los Angeles is perpetually glamorized in the media, inspiring herds of recent graduates to relocate to Los Angeles for their undergraduate degree. Along with ready access to tourist attractions and posh sandy beaches, Los Angeles is a fantastic city for higher education. There are a variety of institutions that can fit the needs of any student striving for a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree.

With a variety of institutions available to aspiring college students, grads who were initially attracted to Los Angeles for its nightlife and thriving social scene might feel overwhelmed. Here’s a breakdown of top colleges in LA and the programs they offer for any confused high school graduate in your life.

UCLA

The first school is the famed UCLA. UCLA is well-reputed for its film and business programs, as well as its variety of other disciplines including political science and psychology.

By definition, UCLA is a public university and offers two different tuition rates, one in-state and one out of state. UCLA tuition is by no means cheap, but its name is widely-recognized among academics and students alike. With widespread recognition, graduates who recently earned their bachelor’s degree fare a better chance of securing job offers in high-paying careers.

Because UCLA is a household name, the acceptance rate is relatively low, standing at 16% overall. The acceptance rate is, unfortunately, even lower for more competitive programs.

For those students who are accepted, they should prepare for the college experience of a lifetime. In the category of campus life, UCLA has been ranked at the top of the charts. In recent years, the University of California, Los Angeles was awarded the best college campus in the US and the best college food in the US, as well as the second-best student life in the nation.

If you’re willing to work hard and play hard, you should consider UCLA as a viable option for your undergraduate experience. Not only is the University of California, Los Angeles located near the heart of Los Angeles, but it offers a number of options for housing.

If you’ve uprooted your life to move to LA both for its vivacious nightlife and its prestigious institutions, and you’re a former high school honors student looking to work even harder in college, UCLA might be the right fit for you.

USC

The University of Southern California is also a great college in the Los Angeles area. Although this particular institution isn’t as well known as UCLA, it has a number of well-reputed programs, such as the animation program which was recently named the second-best animation program in the US

Prepare for pricey tuition at this college institution that surpasses the tuition costs at UCLA. Despite its overwhelming tuition costs, many of the graduates go on to earn more than enough on a salary basis to pay off any student loans.

This school is widely known for design, animation and photography, and known for having some of the best design programs in the United States. USC was also named one of the best universities in the Los Angeles area by Niche, an education-based search engine. Its acceptance rate stands at 13%, so any aspiring USC student will have to earn top grades and establish an impressive resume of extracurriculars if they’re hoping to be accepted.

If you’re dedicated to being the best student you can be and have a passion for art and design, USC should be at the top of your list. While this particular institution can be expensive, you’re paying for a very high-quality college experience that you will remember for the rest of your life. Not to mention, belonging to an accredited and well-known university can translate into higher salaries later in your career. If you’re hoping to develop a set of marketable skills, the University of Southern California is the place for you.

College of the Canyons

College of the Canyons deserves a mention on this list of top colleges in the L.A. area. Though this university is located slightly out of the way in Santa Clarita, College of the Canyons is a more economical option for an undergraduate degree. If you’re looking for a college that won’t break the bank or if you lagged behind in your high school graduating class, this college may be the place just for you.

College of the Canyons is a small community college with significantly lower tuition rates for both in and out-of-state students. This particular institution doesn’t require students to submit scores or record their high school GPA, as all applicants are guaranteed entry.

If you’re looking for a school to cut costs during your online semester in the era of COVID-19, don’t look any further. Not only is it an affordable option for higher education but is stocked with accredited professors and a medium workload. In the wake of the pandemic, students are flooding College of the Canyon’s inbox with applications as COVID-19 shuts down other institutions.

At the College of the Canyon, the most popular majors include liberal arts majors. While this institution won’t be recognized by potential employers, you’ll be able to dodge debilitating student debt, even if you just go there while schools have transitioned to entirely online. Overall, it’s a low-stress college that many students enjoy during their undergraduate experience.

Final thoughts

If you’re still unsure about which of these three colleges in the L.A. are best suited to your educational needs, there are plenty of options available in the Los Angeles Area. Every college student sets different expectations for their college experience, but if you’re committed to relocating to LA, you’re in luck, because there are a number of colleges in the area that are bound to fulfill every one of your visions of your dream college experience.
