Play-Based Learning At Home — March 26, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Dr. Angie Nastovska calls in to the show to talk about play-based learning at home and what she calls, “Genius Hour.” Dr. Nastovska talks about how shifts in education have helped kids gain more agency in their own learning process, as well as gaining more confidence to provide an answer that someone has not talked about yet. Dr. Nastovska talks about how education was shifting prior to the outbreak of Covid-19, and that the quarantines have greatly accelerated some previously slow-moving changes that were already taking place. Play-based learning has made great strides in popularity and efficacy in recent years. Dr. Nastovska talks about other perspective shifts that parents can make happen in their own homes by turning the sound off the TV and turning on subtitles. She also recommends trying to incorporate another language in the home, and challenging everybody to learn a second or third language to help keep kids engaged in the world around them. Dr. Nastovska gives tips and advice on how to keep kids excited and engaged in all of their remote learning endeavors as everyone transitions into a new medium of learning for the rest of the semester.

Later in the show, Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, joins the show as a regular guest at the top of the second hour of the show to provide more information about how to monitor your children’s emotions while they spend a lot more time at home, and in general.

Our final guest is Dr. Julie M. Sturgeon, CPA, to talk about Small Business Association (SBA) loans, filing your taxes, and other financial issues that have arisen due to the outbreak of Covid-19. Dr. Sturgeon talks about the extension of the national deadline for filing your taxes to July 15, and how to get them filed on time. She gives extremely valuable information for how to waive additional fees and charges that usually come with filing your taxes in order to save the most amount of money possible. Dr. Sturgeon also gives updates on the latest changes in property taxes.

Listen in as Matt Watson, Amber Raskin, Dr. Angie Nastovska, Kristina de Bree, and Dr. Julie M. Sturgeon talk about play-based learning at home, and the latest information on SBA loans, filing taxes, property taxes, and other financial topics.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
