Eye On The Valley – SCVi Athletics and Veterans Collaborative – February 17, 2023
On today’s episode of Eye on the Valley, Matt Watson welcomes Tanya Olortegui, the athletic director of SCVi with multiple backgrounds of associate degrees and masters from Cal Lutheran and Liberty University.
As she was trying to get away from the traditional school setting, SCVi allows her more freedom to create a better way to educate children rather than in traditional schools where they have to stick to a certain curriculum in what’s taught to these children. Traditional schools’ curriculum usually includes many activities that aren’t useful to them as they grow up and get older. She shares what they currently have planned so far and how the kids get the opportunities to compete against other schools, where some teams are even bigger than theirs. It is open to elementary, middle, and high schoolers. Their schools are D1 certified and NCAA certifies which allows them a chance to get scholarships.
Afterward, Matt gives everyone a quick recap of what happened at the Super Bowl and how the cowboy festival is back after a 3-year hiatus before welcoming in the next guest, Jeff Sabile.
Jeff is part of a multitude of various volunteer programs and now has been recognized for California’s Community Member of the Year award for 2022. He shares his origins in volunteering which began after retired, he started volunteering for Veterans Collaborative and it started growing from there.
He’s here to discuss what they offer at the Veterans Collaborative whose goal is to help veterans in any way possible. They offer a food bank, medical equipment, and guidance and counseling for them. Especially when they have lost a loved one, there are counselors that can help them during those tough times.
Some veterans aren’t aware of the benefits they have, so there are specialists and counselors that can inform them and how veterans cam submit their claims. If they get denied, they will try to help them see how they are able to get it approved. Additionally, they have a lawyer that will do free wills and trusts.
Jeff talks about the many other ways they help veterans, including some across the country that need help, and the story of how he got nominated for California’s Community Member of the Year Award without knowing it at first.
Lastly, Big T has his five minutes of fame as he hosts trivia for “Frogger” and Andrew!
