Parents in the Mix Contains Mature Content

Veteran Los Angeles-based rapper Murs guests on this week’s episode of Parents in the Mix, a podcast that reviews and discusses music from a parent’s perspective. Murs explains his song and video for “The Worst” that takes the issues of marriage and infidelity head on.

In the video that features Murs’ real life wife and child, the rap star pursues an extramarital affair with a fan and faces the fear of losing his family. He told Parents in the Mix hosts Billy Johnson Jr. and Ebony Macon Johnson that he wrote the strong to address real issues.

His penchant for writing about relationships in his music was partly inspired by having meet some of his hip hop heroes and learned that they were married though it was not something they rapped about in their music. “I wanted to put out music that was dealing with what was really happening in my relationships,” he said. “Now that I’m married, I wanted to continue to talk about those issues.”

Murs also talked about feeling the need to be socially responsible for the content of his music, his rationale for using strong language at home and on stage, and the lackluster response he received to the two profanity-free albums he released.

This episode of Parents in the Mix also covers two other pop songs that deal with relationship issues. Former The X Factor contestants Little Mix’s song and video for “Black Magic” is a tongue-and-cheek tales of high school girls using black magic to win the attention of their crushes, and Halsey’s “Hurricane” tells the story of a young woman’s desire for free love while denying deeper feelings for a love interest.

“I really like this topic because relationship issues are so popular in music,” says Johnson. “Each of the song’s discussed in this episode make strong statements. I think youth can identify with these scenarios. So we just want to make sure parents are paying attention.”

Created by music journalist Billy Johnson Jr., Parents in the MIx is co-executive produced and co-hosted by Johnson and his wife, Ebony Macon Johnson, who also works in the entertainment business.

“Parents in the Mix,” a fun new podcast hosted by husband and wife team Billy Johnson Jr. and Ebony Macon Johnson, keeps parents informed, giving them the valuable insight they need into their children’s playlists.
