Do Antibodies Really Help? — May 20, 2020

On this episode of the Providence Holy Cross Health Hour with Tom Burton, PT, Tom talks to radio station co-owner, Jeri Seratti-Goldman, Dr. Bernie Klein, and Dr. Bernie Fox about whether the presence of antibodies in a person really helps them fight against Covid-19. The doctors talk about how they have been studying everything related to Covid-19 from the moment they heard about it, and have been very interested to see how different people respond to Covid-19. Some people have been exposed to the virus much more than others yet have not caught the virus. Dr. Klein and Dr. Fox have been working with Jeri and studying her blood samples to discover what makes Jeri so resistant to catching the virus. Figuring out what her cells have or do to fight the virus is what doctors around the world are trying to discover right now. Tom makes an excellent analogy relating Covid-19 to a soccer ball, and how the virus has many different panels that are sewn together to make it just like a soccer ball is made. Dr. Klein and Dr. Fox talk about how scientists are slowly discovering the different panels of Covid-19, and how it can be treated. Due to the lack of information available on this present form of the Covid-19 virus, studying human’s innate responses to the virus are huge sources of information doctors can use to learn about how the virus behaves.

Dr. Klein and Dr. Fox also talk about bloodtypes and whether that makes a difference in a person’s susceptibility to getting Covid-19. With the various types of proteins found in Covid-19, it makes it hard for doctors to pin down exactly what makes the virus work, and at the same time, what makes others more susceptible than others. With such a high variance, doctors are working as fast as they can but taking great precautions to make sure they are able to see repeatable, reliable results that show improvement.
