Santa Clarita Resident Honors, Supports Veterans With Fundraising Flags

A Santa Clarita resident has found a way to help support living veterans in the community, by honoring veterans who have passed this coming Memorial Day with fundraising flags.

Tracy Fernandez-Michaels as been spending most of her time making masks, after recently being laid-off due to the shutdown of non-essential businesses.

When she discovered that local boy scout troops would be unable to place flags on the graves of veterans, a Memorial Day tradition, she decided to step into action as the relative of several veterans.

She bought 100 American flags, and around each will tie a red ribbon with the words “we remember” for community members to display either at their own homes, or at the graves of loved ones.

One of the flags is for Fernandez-Michaels’ own father, a veteran himself.

Her goal is to raise funds for the Santa Clarita Grocery, which provides fresh food and meals to local residents in need.

“My hope is that if we get some donations, that I can give all money to the pantry and feed living veterans with whatever they need,” said Fernandez-Michaels. “I don’t’ want the money, I just want the veterans honored, the deceased and the living.”

She said that although she is unable to help with serious personal issues such as PTSD or housing, Fernandez-Michaels aims to help however she can by alleviating stressors related to food availability or whatever other resources the grocery can provide.

“It is important that we don’t forget our values amidst what is happening in the world today, that this is the land of the free because of the brae,” said Fernandez-Michaels. “We remember those who have lost their lives, but also remember those who are still alive. God bless America”

Anyone interested in receiving one of the 98 currently available flags can email Fernandez-Michaels for more information here.

  1. Hopefully the flags she bought were made in America. It’s time to support our own country for awhile
