Most people think of wildfire as a natural disaster. But paradoxically, our canyons thrive because of small, periodic wildfires. Come join us on our free Fire Ecology Hikes and learn about the beneficial effects of wildfire and what you can expect to see as the land regenerates.

The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority is offering a series of early morning Fire Ecology Hikes at Whitney Canyon on Sunday, August 8, 15 and 22, from 7:30 to 9:00 AM. We will meet at the trailhead at the junction of San Fernando Road and Hwy 14. For a map please visit our website at www.lamountains.com/maps/whitneyCanyon.pdf. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring water. The hike is gentle, 1-2 miles with minimal elevation gain and is suitable for families.
Whitney Canyon in tentatively scheduled to re-open on Friday, August 6. It has been closed since the Foothill Fire in July. We ask that visitors please stay on the trail, keep their dogs on leash, and do not spread birdseed or hay for the animals.
