Multiple Road And Trail Closures Coming To Santa Clarita This Month

Santa Clarita commuters and trail users should prepare for several major closures this October as Caltrans, Metro, and city crews work on critical infrastructure improvements.

I-5 Bridge Repairs Near Magic Mountain

Caltrans is performing emergency overnight repairs on the Santa Clara River Bridge at southbound I-5 near Magic Mountain Parkway.

Up to three lanes will close nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., October 6 through November 7.

The work includes permanent repairs to damaged steel components. Drivers should expect delays, detours, and overnight construction noise.

I-5 On-Ramp Closure at Lyons Avenue/Pico Canyon Road

As part of the I-5 North County Enhancements Project, Metro’s contractor will close the westbound Lyons Avenue/Pico Canyon Road on-ramp to southbound I-5 for a continuous 24-hour closure from Monday, October 6 through Tuesday, November 4.

Crews will perform excavation, paving, electrical upgrades, and guardrail installation. Night work may also involve intermittent lane closures between 7 p.m. and 9 a.m.

Detour: The Old Road north to McBean Parkway east to the southbound I-5 on-ramp.

Officials say the projects are designed to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and improve long-term reliability of the area’s roads and trails. Residents are urged to plan extra travel time and expect temporary noise and detours.

“These are short-term inconveniences that will bring long-term benefits,” project representatives noted.

Closures on the I-5 are:

  • Caltrans has announced daytime lane reductions at various locations in both directions of Interstate 5 from Lake Hughes Road to two miles north of Templin Highway for pavement rehabilitation during the week of Oct. 6-10.
  • One lane of northbound or southbound I-5 may be closed at various locations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6 through Friday, Oct. 10.
  • The southbound Lake Hughes Road on- and off-ramps may be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6 through Friday, Oct. 10.

Santa Clara River Trail Maintenance

From October 6–10, maintenance crews will be working along portions of the Santa Clara River Trail.

While the trail will remain open most of the week, a full closure is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8, between Bouquet Canyon Road and Millhouse Drive as part of the city’s Road Rehab Project. Trail users are encouraged to plan ahead and use alternate routes.
