The schoolwide assembly is set to teach students about western culture through mystic storytelling, old time poetry and music.

Gary the Cowboy, the leader of the assembly, is scheduled to teach the 6th graders how to play four cowboy songs.

“After the students learn the four songs, the students alongside Gary the Cowboy will perform the songs to the younger students,” said Yolonda Calderon, arts and school supervisor for the City of Santa Clarita.
Katie Hubbard, a teacher at Santa Clarita Elementary School, described the importance of having musicians visit elementary age students:
“We are thrilled to have Mr. Allegretto visit Santa Clarita Elementary today. Music is very important in the wiring of our children’s brains,” said Hubbard. “Music enriches our students’ learning and we love having the city and the district support this amazing process.”

Mountain View Elementary and Skyblue Mesa Elementary are also set to have Gary the Cowboy attend their schools to demonstrate to the fifth graders the same workshop.
“These three schools were selected from a drawing done by the city,” said Calderon. “The city can’t pay for all elementary schools to have the assembly each year. It is too soon to say, but we will probably do another drawing again next year to have Gary the Cowboy visit three new schools.”
