A new episode of ‘The Simpsons’ which features a unique crossover of PBS’ “Finding Your Roots” and host Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. premiering tonight was written by Santa Clarita resident Loni Steele Sosthand.
This Sunday’s newest episode features an interesting crossover with Dr. Gates from “Finding Your Roots.” The episode, “Carl Carlsen Rides Again,” centers on Homer Simpson’s colleague at the nuclear power plant, Carl, who delves into his racial identity for the first time by going on “Finding Your Roots.”
“Finding Your Roots” on PBS follows Gates as he uses genealogical detective work and DNA analysis to help guests go through their family trees and uncover the stories of ancestors.
The episode was written by screenwriter and Santa Clarita resident Loni Steele Sosthand. Sosthand was also behind last season’s episode “The Sound of Bleeding Gums,” which featured the first-ever use of ASL on the show and its first deaf voice actors.
The logtine of the episode is as follows: “When Carl is smitten by a beautiful black woman, her strong ties to her heritage ignite insecurities in him. He’s going to blow it with her if he doesn’t finally look more deeply into his roots, starting with the unlikeliest of clues to his black identity: a mysterious rodeo buckle.”
The episode comes as other historic moves in Hollywood are being made regarding Black voices and storytelling. “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan is filming “Bass Reeves,” starring David Oyelowo as the historic Black cowboy.
Sosthand noted that this development plays a part in the Simpsons episode.
“Stories about black cowboys are finally getting some overdue attention in Hollywood,” Sosthand said. “We, I hope, are on the forefront.”
The episode is set to premiere tonight at 8 p.m. ET.
