Santa Clarita Born, Raised Actor Offers Program For Young Actors

With theatre production of all kinds on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, actress Bre Tomey has returned from New York to her hometown of Santa Clarita to offer young actors guidance in pursuing the arts in college and beyond.

Additionally, Tomey is collaborating with other local artists and students to create a virtual production piece.

Tomey recalls her passion for performing arts since the age of 8, ultimately attending NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and graduating in 2018 with a BFA in Drama. She was expected to begin a year-long Shakespeare tour when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and now waits for the “okay” from the Actor’s Equity Association on when it will be safe for actors to work again.

On hiatus until June 2021, Tomey relocated to Santa Clarita and is working to offer her experience and guidance, along with other SCV alumni, to young actors and students interested in pursuing the arts.

“I remember how loaded of a process my undergraduate auditions were, and the people that did help me throughout […] That rigor and passion is what got me into NYU. I want to help others in that same way – breaking down the process and giving them the tools to succeed,” said Tomey. “I want to help students answer the question of ‘how do I get out and pursue?’”

While working with high school juniors, seniors and college transfer students with BFA audition and application preparation, she hopes to help make the process less daunting than her own experience was.

Her services include private coaching to discuss target colleges and preparing audition material, editing of personal statements and college application essays, and college alumni forums. She will be located in Santa Clarita throughout this year’s audition process.

“Whether you’re looking for guidance on getting into a competitive performing arts college or technical voice and text work, Bre knows it all, and I could not recommend her more,” said Noah Ozuna, SCV Alum and 2020 NYU Tisch Graduate.

Along with college preparation, students will have the opportunity to create a virtual production in the coming months with Tomey and other local working artists that reflects the challenging times faced by the performing arts community. “What does it mean to perform when there is no one to perform for?” Tomey asks. “What happens when you’re forced to remove the idea of an audience, but still have the desire to create?”

All sessions are currently virtual and all college application assistance is free for Black artists and students of color. Her website can be found here.
