City officials began the meeting by recognizing the William S. Hart 8U Gold Fastpitch softball team, which competed in a number of state and national competitions this past summer, earning an overall record of 37 wins, 7 losses and one tie.

In addition to acknowledging the success of the local girls’ softball team, Santa Clarita City Council members also took time to recognize Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month.
Councilmember Cameron Smyth stressed the importance of celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, as it both commemorates the independence days for a number of Latin American countries, and also serves as an annual recognition of the “commitments and contributions made by the Hispanic and Latino communities that have made our community what it is today.”
There to support the acknowledgment of Hispanic Heritage Month were Assemblyman Dante Acosta, Saugus School Board Member Paul De La Cerda, and 2018 Santa Clarita Woman of the Year Gloria Mercado-Fortine.

Following comments from the public, the meeting proceeded into official agenda items, beginning with councilmembers approving the establishment of a dollar-for-dollar grant match program with Homes for Families, a nonprofit working to house military veterans in affordable housing in the Santa Clarita Valley.
As part of their Enriched Neighborhood Affordable Housing Veterans’ project, Homes for Families made plans to build 78 Santa Clarita homes, but could only acquire enough funding for constructing 60 local homes due to an increase in unanticipated costs.
In order to assist them in their goal of completing the remaining 18 homes, councilmembers approved a funding program that would see the City match up to $75,000 raised by Homes for Families.
In addition to discussing Homes for Families, the Santa Clarita City Council approved that Arcadis U.S., Inc be awarded the $1,374,658 total construction management and constructability review of the plans contract for the new Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The contract stipulates that Arcadis will oversee the development and construction of LASD’s new Santa Clarita headquarters, a $62 million, 45,000-square-foot project, along with a 4,000-square-foot vehicle maintenance facility and helipad to serve the entire Santa Clarita Valley.
Located at 26201 Golden Valley Road, the new Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station is scheduled to be completed by fall 2020.
