Learning how to swim can save lives, yet in the United States, while 80 percent report they can swim, in reality, only 56 percent can perform the five basic skills required for safe swimming.

Teaching your child how to swim at an early age can be critical.

Swimming is for fun and fitness but also equips your child with the means to navigate water safely.

Santa Clarita families have been enrolling their kids at Academy Swim Club for decades.

Academy Swim Club has two indoor facilities teaching private, group and baby swim lessons.
Their school has a wide variety of offerings for your child.

Here are some tips for teaching kids to swim:

Swimming is not just a fun and enjoyable activity; it’s also a life skill that can ensure your child’s safety around water. Teaching your child to swim can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be challenging. Here are some tips to make the process smoother and more enjoyable for both you and your child.

1. Start Early and Make it Fun
The earlier you introduce your child to water, the more comfortable they will become. Start by making bath time fun. Splash water gently, play with toys, and make positive associations with water.

As your child grows older, you can gradually introduce them to larger bodies of water like a kiddie pool or a shallow end of a community pool.

2. Safety First
Before you start teaching your child to swim, ensure that the environment is safe. Never leave your child unattended near water, even if they are comfortable in it. Invest in a good quality life jacket for your child and make sure they wear it whenever they are near water. Teach them about pool rules, such as not running around the pool area and not going into the water without an adult present.

3. Start with the Basics
Begin with teaching your child how to blow bubbles in the water. This simple activity will help them get used to having their face in the water. Next, teach them to float. Hold them horizontally in the water and let them feel the buoyancy. Once they are comfortable with these basics, you can move on to teaching them simple strokes.

4. Use Tools and Toys
Swimming aids like floaties, noodles, and kickboards can be very helpful when teaching your child to swim. They provide extra support and can make the learning process less intimidating. Toys can also be used to make the lessons more fun. For example, you can throw a toy in the water and ask your child to retrieve it.

5. Gradual Progression
Don’t rush the process. Let your child progress at their own pace. Start with shallow water and gradually move to deeper areas as your child becomes more confident. Similarly, start with simple strokes and gradually introduce more complex ones. Remember, the goal is to make your child comfortable and confident in the water, not to make them an expert swimmer overnight.

6. Encourage and Reward
Positive reinforcement goes a long way in teaching new skills. Praise your child for their efforts and progress, no matter how small. You can also use small rewards to motivate them. For example, if your child is afraid of getting their face wet, you can promise a treat if they try to do it.

7. Get Professional Help if Needed
If you’re finding it difficult to teach your child to swim, or if your child is particularly fearful of water, consider enrolling them in professional swimming lessons. Trained instructors have the skills and experience to teach swimming in a safe and effective manner. Academy Swim Club offers many programs to assist your child at all ages of development.

Teaching your child to swim can be a fun and rewarding experience. It’s a great way to bond with your child and instill in them a love for water. With patience, persistence, and the right approach, your child will soon be splashing around with confidence. Remember, every child is different, so what works for one might not work for another. The key is to be patient and make the process as enjoyable as possible.

About Carl Goldman

Carl Goldman, along with his wife, Jeri repurchased KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita’s hometown station on October 24, 2003. They owned it from 1990-1998, and then sold it to Clear Channel Communication in 1998, buying it back from Clear Channel in 2003. Since then, they have rebuilt KHTS as a critical voice of the Valley. In 2015 the radio station moved to its new headquarters on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, in the original Newhall Hardware building. In 2018 an FM was added, 98.1, with its signal being simulcast with AM-1220. In January 2020, Carl and Jeri cruised on the Diamond Princess. Carl was one of the first Americans to come down with Covid-19. Months earlier he was impacted by Guillain Barre Syndrome as a result of a Shingles vaccine in September 2019. He is still in recovery from the vaccine.
