Taking on the different trails in Santa Clarita has likely been far from our minds in recent days, with most of us trapped indoors due to the weather. But sunnier days are in the forecast for Santa Clarita, and with that the opportunity to get outdoors again.
Santa Clarita is home to a variety of open spaces and trails for residents to explore, and with the recent rains turning the surrounding hills green, a hike is sure to be a sight-seeing opportunity.
1. Placerita Canyon Open Space
This area is tucked into the mountains on the south side of the 14 Freeway, with a number of trails ranging from easy to hard. By taking Placerita Canyon Road, one can travel the winding road up to the Nature Center and Park Entrance. The Nature Center is a great place to take kids, with different animals and fossils inside.
Placerita has shady trails, with large oak groves and sycamore trees lining the pathways, as well as a small creek that is sure to flow full after the recent rains. History buffs can visit the famous Oak of the Golden Dream, the location where gold was discovered in 1842 by Francisco Lopez.
2. Vasquez Rocks
For more experienced hikers and climbers looking for a challenge and are okay with a small drive, the historic Vasquez Rocks in Agua Dulce are a great place to explore. In 1874 Tiburcio Vasquez, one of California’s most notorious bandits, used these rocks to elude capture by law enforcement. His name has since been associated with this geologic feature.
The park is a popular hiking, picnicking, and equestrian area and has been used in many hit movies, television shows and commercials including Star Trek. The trails at this location can be a bit harder with steep areas and rocks, but it’s a climber’s heaven.
3. Halsey Canyon
On the other side of Santa Clarita is Hasley Canyon Open Space, located in Castaic. The open space is located near neighborhoods, making sure hikers are able to stay close to the city.
The Hasley Canyon Trails is the popular trail in the open space, a 1.67 urban trail with flat terrain, perfect for a caual stroll or beginner hikers. The location is also popular for biking and jogging. The trail is fairly populated and provides a view of surrounding mountains and terrain.
