During Valentine’s Day 2019, Americans are expected to spend billions on their sweethearts, and a few Santa Clarita residents shared their plans with KHTS.
On Valentine’s Day, Americans are set to spend $20.7 billion on gifts ranging from three-course meals, flowers, jewelry and candy for their sweethearts, according to WalletHub, a personal finance website.
On average, each American who celebrates Valentine’s Day is projected to spend $161.96 per person, with men being two times more likely than women to spend over $100.
WalletHub also projects that Americans are set to spend $3.9 billion on jewelry, $1.9 billion on flowers and $1.8 billion on candy.
KHTS Radio went to Honu Coffee in Newhall to see how these numbers matched up to Santa Clarita Valley spenders.
Ryan James, KHTS’ “Man on the Street,” asked Santa Clarita residents how much they would pay for their sweetheart, and most said $50 was the minimum and $100 was the maximum.
One couple said they plan to work out together and cook a meal for each other.
During the month of February, the WalletHub study shows that men are willing to pay more for a gift than they can afford in an effort to show their love for their significant other.
Men are over three times more likely than women to think a Valentine’s Day gift is worth going into credit card debt for, the study showed.
For millions of couples each year, Feb. 14 is more than just a day they receive tasty treats or flowers from their significant other that may only last a few days.
On Valentine’s Day each year, around 9 million marriage proposals are made, according to the study.
