Veterinarian In Santa Clarita Offers Advice For Adult Dogs Who Resist Potty Training

A veterinarian in Santa Clarita is offering advice on what to do if an adult dog has decided they prefer to wait and potty inside the house after being taken outside for regular potty breaks.

“That is really hard,” said Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto of Cinema Veterinary Centre. “It is harder to train adult dogs than it is puppies. It’s not that they can’t be trained; it’s just more difficult because they’re sort of already set in their ways.”

Ronchetto recommended treating adult dogs in that situation like puppies and starting potty training efforts over again.

“When you’re potty training puppies, a lot of times potty training will fail if you give them too big of a world basically too soon,” she explained. “So if you give them full run of the house, there’s just way too many areas for them to make a mistake.”

In this case, a puppy might leave their owner in the living room, go potty in the dining room and return to the living room as if nothing had happened. Then when the owner discovers the mess later, it’s much harder to correct, according to Ronchetto.

With an adult dog, rather than giving them “full run” of the house during potty training, Ronchetto advises utilizing a crate, gated area or specific room to “make their world really small” temporarily.

“Even though it seems harsh or severe to keep them in a carrier like a crate, crate training does help,” she said. “So when you’re not right there with them to supervise, they go in their crate. Then every hour when you’re home with them, to maybe two hours, but no longer than that, you’re taking them outside.”

While outside, Ronchetto said to use a command like, “Go potty,” and if the dog does, to give them lots of praise. Then when it’s time to come back inside, they should go back to their crate or other small area.

“As they get used to that and if they’re successful in their small space not going potty, only going potty outside and coming in and being successful that way, then you start to give them more and more area,” Ronchetto said. “It takes a long time, but eventually, you can have them have full run of the house and they’re fully potty trained.”

If the dog starts to revert in their training as they are given more space, Ronchetto recommended taking a step back once again.

“If at any point it starts to fail, then you just pull back a little bit,” she said. “You go back to the last place that they were successful at.”
