National Guard Expected To Be In Santa Clarita During Thursday’s Protest

The National Guard is expected to be present in Santa Clarita Thursday as officials prepare for a reportedly large protest in Valencia, city officials confirmed Wednesday.

Santa Clarita City Councilman Bob Kellar confirmed Wednesday that the National Guard will be present in the city Thursday in preparation for a large protest that is reportedly being planned in Valencia.

“I had an opportunity to speak with the assistant city manager and do a review for tomorrow,” Kellar said. “One thing was abundantly clear, through working with local law enforcement and other entities, we have clearly prepared extensively.”

The city began preparing for the protest after an anonymous social media post circulated throughout several Santa Clarita groups Monday. The post claimed that a protest with hundreds of attendees would start at noon Thursday at the intersection of Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway.

“All protesters who wish to assemble peacefully and share their feelings and concerns can assemble in the City of Santa Clarita,” according to a statement issued Monday by the city. “Those looters and rioters who are looking to cause damage and steal property will be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

The planned protest on Thursday, along with every protest in Valencia over the past several days, came to be after the death of George Floyd, an unarmed African American man who died in police custody after being arrested in Minneapolis for allegedly attempting to purchase groceries with a counterfeit $20 bill.

The National Guard has been deployed around the country as many demonstrations and protests have turned to violence over the past week. As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, all protests within the Santa Clarita Valley have remained peaceful.

“I’m very impressed with what we’re going to have, along with support from the National Guard,” Kellar said. “Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that (the protestors) are within compliance.”

The Santa Clarita City Council has called an emergency meeting for 4 p.m. Wednesday to discuss the possible protest that the city may face Thursday, and are expected to hold a press conference to update the public shortly thereafter.

National Guard Expected To Be In Santa Clarita During Thursday’s Protest

  1. They aren’t messing around. This will either escalate tensions … or as things have been winding down – become more of a no-show.

  2. I told you all months ago right here in this site that the National Guard would be rolling down the streets here in Santa Clarita in their tanks and other vehicles! I remember a few of you (you know who you are) replied, “No way!”, “That would never happen here!” Said that was ridiculous! Guess what?! They’re HERE! NOW! LOL! Nailed it! ?

    • What foresight considering George Floyd was killed only nine days ago. Very impressive, Lisa. Tanks?

      • It’s what I said.

        • Honestly, I said that in the context of the Coronavirus and the National Guard coming to enforce Marshall Law, but STILL———who ever woulda thought they would ACTUALLY be here?! Regardless of the reason, here they are! On the streets of SCV!!

          • Marshall Law? That would be Matt Dillon or Wyatt Earp. Ha!

          • It’s Martial Law. Also, I still can’t get a clear picture of whom called out the toy soldiers to begin with; only the governor can send the guard and if anyone else made the request, they were in COMPLETE violation of the Constitution and should be arrested for abuse of their office. Bob Kellar? Mayor Cameron “no mask” Smyth? The City manufactured an “emergency” based upon “…an anonymous social media post circulated throughout several Santa Clarita groups Monday. The post claimed that a protest with hundreds of attendees would start at noon Thursday at the intersection of Valencia Boulevard and McBean Parkway” — Bob Kellar. Hardly concrete information. So these fascists in their little Santa Clorox fiefdom use a rumor to abuse their oaths of office and violate our Constitution and civil rights.

    • I agree. We were warned at least 2 years ago there would be rioting in the streets. Here it is.

    • Um….you said the national guard or military would be here for covid-19 and to make us all stay in our homes during your Marshal Law rant. Blaring their horns in the streets you said…blah, blah, blah some nonsense like that along those lines.. Because of this virus?! And guess what, IT NEVER HAPPENED DUMBASS! Do you usually just make up stuff in your head and believe it as reality, even if it’s not Lisa? Their here for the looting, just like last time in 1992 for the LA riots. The National guard deployment for looting across the country happens all the time when things like this happen. Keep it real please and not fake. Nailed it!!….Making stuff up to toot your fake horn is rather embarrassing, don’t you think?

  3. These protesters can cancel the SCV protest for Thursday now!! Put a lid on it! End it NOW! Enough is enough! Anything more now is redundant, way overblown, and a waste of time! If you pay attention to the news, you’ll see that the main cop’s charges have just been upped to 2nd degree murder! The others have also been charged and that’s all you’re gonna get! Regardless whether you ‘think’ he should be charged with 1st degree murder, it ain’t gonna happen! That would require premeditation, which the facts do not support at all! The 2nd degree charge is completely appropriate. A felony assault was committed, which unintentionally resulted in the man’s death, which fits the requirement for the 2nd degree charge! That’s the deal, right there! I suppose you should also understand that at the time the man had underlying conditions like hypertensive heart disease, Fentanyl Intoxication, and recent methamphetimine use! If he didn’t try to pass a $20 counterfeit bill, this never would’ve happened! Great guy! ? What this boils down to is a fake Bill and a police encounter! Period!

    • This post was a rollercoaster. Your start as a typical AllLivesMatter weirdo and then devolve into conspiracy theory racist to full blown ignorance. I’m impressed.

Ignoring your blatant racism you clearly don’t understand that the protest is more than George Floyd. We’re tired of seeing black people be murdered by cops over and over.

      • Last year there were a total of 10 instances of police killing unarmed blacks down from 38 in 2015 when Obama was president. 8 of these were ruled as justifiable homicide as the perpetrator was attacking the cop. in 2 cases, charges filed against the cop. This is a pretty low number in a nation of 325 million. This a small number compared to 1 week in Chicago but somehow Lisa thinks there is an undeclared war on young black men. If she would open her eyes to the facts, she could chill out and thank God that we live in a great law abiding country

      • Were tired of blacks people saying everything is racist and blaming their crappy life on on everyone else instead of taking responsibility for their own crappy decision in life.

        • Hey Will, do all of us who are not racists a favor and not group us into your bigoted rants. Speak for yourself and use the pronoun ‘I” instead of “we’re” when spouting YOUR nonsense. Thanks Will!!

    • This is not just about George Floyd (side note that just because the officers were arrested DOESN’T mean they will be convicted. There is still a lot of work to do for that) it’s about the injustice that black people witness every day. They are done and honestly I don’t blame them. Dylan Roof murdered 9 people in a church in Charleston and was arrested peacefully while George Floyd was “suspected” of forgery and was murdered that is why people are protesting THAT is what this cause is about. I love this City I was raised here however, it saddens me that so many people are against a protest for equality but for a protest because people don’t want to wear a mask and want to go back to work.

    • What this boils down to is that this country has too many people like yourself that refuse to accept the reality of how things are for people who aren’t white like yourself. Face it, you are lucky that you have the privilege that you do to feel safe when you get pulled over. You are lucky that you don’t have to worry about your kids as they hang out with their friends at night who might have an encounter with a police officer that shares the same views as you. I hope the protest is huge and walks right in front of your house and stops there for an hour or so so that you can enjoy it. And furthermore, this is not about the fake 20 dollar bill. You are already passing judgement that George Floyd knew the alleged bill you speak of was fake. Perhaps he had no idea. It just points to your racist views that because he was a black man he obviously was consciously committing a crime. You should be ashamed of yourself.

      • You just gave clear everyday examples of white privilege; something most of us are not even aware of but taken for granted anyway. Props, Kent. This should be a learning experience, not a hands over ears full throated a la la la denial of truth.

        • There you go with your mentally damaging statement of white privilege to people. If you tell people of color they will get treated different because of your white privilege theory it will stick with them their whole life always thinking they didn’t make it because of the color of their skin.

          • Hey Will, I’m not sure if you know this, but I don’t think you need to tell people of color that white privlege exists. In fact, it is so ubiquitous that white people such as yourself don’t even realize that they benefit from it on a daily basis. Pretty crazy, huh?

    • A second autopsy was done and there were absolutely no traces of drugs or any underlying conditions. Funny how easy it was to blame George Floyd for the polices behavior. Shame on you.

      • Wrong the family hired their own autopsy guy he said he had fentanyl and meth in his system look it up. Lesson is don’t break the law so you don’t have to do with cops and never put up a fight against them.

    • Lisa,
You, and everyone like you are part of the problem. You have no empathy. You have no understanding of the ROOT of the problem. You say “enough is enough, put a lid on it, waste of time, redundant, way overblown, end it NOW”.

The black community has been screaming “Please stop killing us!” For 400yrs!! How DARE you trivialize this moment in time. You need to pick up a black history book and READ!

Charging these 4 murderers in no way fixes the systemic racism that permeates every aspect of life for blacks especially, but also for Latinos, Mexicans and Asians. That is something we need to fix from deep inside our justice system, our policing, our immigration laws and what we teach our children.

    • Lisa, your entire statement is incorrect.
He didn’t use a fake note.
He didn’t have any illegal drugs in his system.
What this boils down to is, you’re a moron. If you’re a lawyer. You need to find a more suitable job, like licking concrete.

      • Cool, I have the privilege to pass counterfeit money. I will have to try that out sometime.
I think everyone should be held accountable for their actions.

    • Lisa, you are very ignorant of what is going on. You see one man dead, one occurrence of police brutality, and enough is enough? May I remind your white privileged A this has been going on for 4 centuries. That’s 400 years for you uneducated. Hell of a long time for people to be afraid. People of all color have every right to protest the unjust use of documented police brutality and over the top physical force. We should be protesting the police who stand by and do nothing. Protest the protectors of the crimson within the justice system. Protest the corruption in every branch! Enough is enough of these monkey flying Jack Apples!

Protest don’t riot. Protest don’t loot. Protest don’t destroy. Reform, stop the hate!

    • The city counsel members should be out there in force with the protesters ! Interesting that they didn’t speak of being impressed by peaceful protesters but only of being impressed that the national guard is rolling in ! Smff

    • So passing knowingly or not is a crime punishable by affixation and killing a mean intentionally or not is OK your sense of justice is interesting much like 911 many folks are feeling that they need to be heard, the continued difference in treatment for one segment of the population has reached a point at which some feel the need to show solidarity to allow people to try to comprehend the hurt that is felt by the disenfranchised.
At the same time peaceful protest will make the point and an unruly mob will hurt the cause, PEACE.

  4. Anyone who spells martial law “Marshall Law” is either ignorant, unintelligent, or in the case of Lisa, both.

Rant rant rant! This is not going away, Lisa – you’d better get over that.

    • What a bunch of fools! I’m definitely NOT racist at ALL! That you think I am is YOUR problem! I could care less! Mike, like you’ve never made a spelling or grammatical mistake! ?
You know the ironic thing, though? Deal with it! One thing you’re right about is this isn’t going away! Not today, not next year, maybe not EVER! Fact is, no matter how many protests, how many blacks get killed, how many people cry, how much phony lip-service our leaders spout, this isn’t going to stop! This isn’t anything new, folks! It’s been the same for over 50+ years! Happens again and again and again! It goes in a circle! At the top of the circle is people being pissed off that an event occurred, then the reaction, then the civil unrest, then people being hopeful that constructive dialog is going on, then it all dies down, then it all goes away for awhile, then once again something happens again, and we’re back at the top of the circle again, ready to go round once again ad-nausium! It’s never gonna stop! You think so and you’re ignorant, or you haven’t lived as long as I have to see it with your own two eyes! People haven’t learned, and they’re not going to! Realize that! You can be ‘hopeful’ and argue about it all you want, but the reality is that you’re talking about it now, and when you’re old, they will STILL be arguing about it! Remember that! You’ll see! MLK had his dream almost 60 years ago and nothing’s changed, gotten better since! Have we learned? What does that tell you? Spinning our wheels once again! Here we go back around the circle in the vicious cycle!

      • Exactly what this movement is about, Lisa, breaking the cycle. Nothing less will do.

        • Won’t happen! Sorry, I’m not racist at all! But I AM a realist! And I’ve been around for a long while! Tell you what—for all of you that actually think any of this will change things—you’re in for a rude awakening! History will show you otherwise! (Sorry to burst your little bubble!)

        • Nothing has changed? I guess you forgot that Jim Crow laws were abolished and we have had a black president. The thing is, you don’t want anything to change. You just want to stew in your misery.

          • Exactly a black president you didn’t see him dressing like a thug or acting like a thug he had no problems this so called racism is all in your head your just looking for someone to blame your crappy life on

          • You seem to forget that Obama was half white, So was he a “black President’? or was he a half black president?

          • Hi again Will. Could you please explain “dressing like a thug”? Are you saying that the way someone dresses determines whether or not they are “thugs”? Well anyway, let me know!!

          • Oh Albert, you can describe Mr. Obama anyway you would like. What I will say is that he was a PRESIDENT! Well anyway, let me know what you think!

      • Nothing Has Changed in 60 years ? My grandfather talked about having to walk on one side of the road or get beaten. Go to the library and read up on history of civil rights here in America.
John Stuart Mill, said in 1867: “Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.”

      • Yeah you are a racist Lisa.

      • What a racist pig. You want to know the cause. It’s people like you. Please post your address so we can send all future demonstrations to your house.

        • The blm hate group is the racist. Promoting hate, vandalism, looting and even death shame on you all

          • Boy, are YOU ignorant…and a bundle of fear. We are none of those things — just refusing to allow your foot on another Black neck.

          • Hi again Will. Once again, you are wrong. It must be very frustrating for you to be so misinformed. Black Lives Matter was formed in 2013 following the murder of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of his killer. It is not a hate group, but an organization that formed to seek justice for Black people who have been illegally killed by police and vigilantes. Anyway, let me know what you think!

  5. I don’t understand why a protest against excessive use of force will be met with excessive force.

Unfortunately our Sheriffs, Mayor, and City Council have planned in advance to bully peaceful protestors with a militarized force in riot gear.

I will be out there protesting peacefully until our City Council and Sheriffs commit to:

    1. REVIEW police use of force policies.
    2. ENGAGE with Santa Clarita by including a diverse range of input, experiences, and stories in their review.
    3. REPORT the findings of the review to and seek feedback.
    4. REFORM the Sheriffs use of force policies.

They must also implement policies and laws in order to:

    1. Require officers to de-escalate situations, where possible, through communication, maintaining distance, slowing things down, and otherwise eliminating the need to use force.

    2. Prohibit officers from using maneuvers that cut off oxygen or blood flow, including chokeholds or or carotid restraints, which often result in unnecessary death or serious injury.

    3. Require officers to intervene and stop excessive or unnecessary force used by other officers and report these incidents immediately to a supervisor.

    4. Restrict officers from shooting at moving vehicles, which is regarded as a particularly dangerous and ineffective tactic.

    5. Limit the types of force and/or weapons that can be used to respond to specific types of resistance and specific characteristics such as age, size, or disability.

    6. Require officers to exhaust all other reasonable means before resorting to deadly force.

    7. Prohibit the use of tasers, pepper spray and other chemical weapons.

    8. Require officers to report each time they use force or threaten to use force (e.g., pointing a gun at a person).

    • If a few in the crowd start destroying property, will you stop them? If they begin throwing thing at the police, will you join them or discourage them? How about if the looting starts, do you feel that this is justified? The cops are there to stop that as will many citizens, all of which believe George Floyd’s murder was wrong and should not go unpunished.

  6. I really hope that ignorant people in this post really, really educate themselves on the BLM. It’s the right of the people to rally and protest. Remember the 60’s? It had an impact – although not enough. As our youth become more educated, it’s them who are going to make the change the world needs. Let them rally! Let them protest! It’s the foundation our country was built on!!! Thank you to ALL THE EDUCATORS who have taught our kids to stand beyond what they believe and fight for their rights. A young and vibrant MLK did it – why not now! We all should stand behind them and encourage them to do it correctly. Let their voices be heard.

  7. Has anyone in the new organizations in and outside of SCV corroborated or verified the rumor that we would have a protest? Or track down the source? This is a rumor tha y’all are jumping on.

  8. We are a community of hard working Americans of all races and cultural backgrounds. Shaming and name calling outstanding citizens is the quick go-to these days. We are proud of our community SCV. Stay safe. All Lives Matter. We love our law enforcement. Now more than ever since Saugus High School shooting. Keep exploiting the situation and using it as a excuse to riot, vandalize, loot, set fire to those that worked hard to get where they are today.

Work hard. Make something of yourself. Don’t blame others for your failures, whatever your race is.

    • You live in a bubble. It is so easy for you to discount the struggles of others. You say, “Work hard. Make something of yourself” as if people of color are not trying to do those very things everyday just like you. You don’t even realize the opportunities afforded you for being white. You are lumping together people who want legitimate changes to the way they are treated by police and the looters that took advantage of the situation. You mention Saugus high school. Do you think that we have a flawed system that is contributing to this country suffering through mass school shootings several times a year? Would you discount people protesting to make changes to gun laws that could keep kids safer? Or would that be OK because it affects your life? What you have is a selfish view. Perhaps you should consider the struggles of others and not worry so much about your little Santa Clarita bubble getting a hole in it. This town is not immune from social problems. You are just blind to them.

  9. The fact that it was important for you to point out gleefully that you were right(“you know who you are”) in and “Nailed it!” is amazing. SMH. That is your main takeaway from all of this??! The country is going through a major crisis of inequality and racism. My takeaway from your post is that you just publicly revealed your shallowness and ignorance.

  10. The fact your post was written to point out how right you are (“you know who you are”) and “Nailed it!” is amazing to me. SMH. That is your main takeaway? Our country is going through a major crisis of continued inequality and racism not just for one man but for a whole group of American citizens.

My main takeaway from your post was that you just publicly revealed your shallowness and racism.

  11. Protests are this counries foundation. Looting and criminal thug behavior are just that. raises your voices in peace. any criminals go to frigging jail!

  12. Kent- I’m just trying to figure out how you knew she was white…?

    • ‘specially since I’m NOT! LOL!

    • I assumed. Maybe I shouldn’t have but my point remains the same.

      • Yeah, that’s part of your problem! You assume everything and know nothing! You do this all the time! Your posts are simply regurgitated rhetoric. What YOU have is I piggish, selfish, bandwagon view and you love to put down anyone who has a different view than yourself! You must think you know everything and everyone else is an idiot! Finger-pointing king, that’s certainly the way you come across! Unfortunately, regardless of your weak efforts, you are the idiot yourself! Keep taking your meds, buddy! You know you get like this every time you stop taking them! Turn yourself in for a 72, will ya? ?

        • My dearest Lisa, I’m sorry this is how you feel about me. We used to be so close. Remember the nights we had before you started insulting me and calling me names? I remember when you weren’t a racist. I don’t know what happened to you. Well anyway, you take care!

          • Oh yeah, I remember you! You’re that super ugly moron guy with the inchworm! Remember you used to send me pics of yourself? I told you I wasn’t interested, then you tried to sexually assault me before I kicked you in the balls! Took care of that! You went whimpering away because you wish you were a man, but you’re a POS! Remember you ran like a sissy when I pulled my 9mm and threatened to blow your head off? You’re nothing but a pansy fruitcake! Go away and get mental help, loser!

          • If that’s how you feel then quit asking me over for booty calls. DUMP TRUMP 2020!!!

  13. #alllivesmatter not just black lives. Keep this community save and arrest the out of towners trying to destroy this community. I love all my neighbors regardless of color. By the way I am Korean. Thank for to our law enforcement and our city council for trying to keep our city and families safe.

    • Just so you know, saying “Black lives matter” does not exclude the fact that all lives matter. That goes without saying. You mention that you are Korean. Do you feel that Korean people are treated the same way by police as Black people? Do you feel scared when you are pulled over by police? Are you afraid for your family members when they encounter police? Do you feel that you are followed around in a convenience store because you are Korean? Do you feel you have been treated unfairly because of the color of your skin? Have you been denied a job or housing because you are Korean? These protests are not only about the murder of George Floyd. They are about the systematic mistreatment of American citizens because of the color of their skin. By saying “all lives matter”, you are discounting the daily reality felt by millions of Americans. Perhaps you should look outside of yourself and put yourself in the shoes of others before discounting the message and the movement.

  14. Someone should interview the black woman who George Floyd held a gun to her belly while she was pregnant and his friends robbed her apartment and then was beaten on the head by George Floyd with his gun when they were done robbing her. This is why he was in prison for five years, I hope she and her child are in good health. I hope she has overcome her trauma and ordeal.

    • Does that give the cops the right to act as judge, jury and executioner?

If he passed a counterfeit $20 bill, knowingly or unknowingly, then arrest him. No need to brutalize and kill him, especially when he wasn’t resisting.

And to Lisa and certain others, the reason this is such a big deal is because, for once, it was captured on video. There’s no doubt what happened.

I can almost see why you think BLM is a racist organization, but only because blacks see themselves as the ultimate victims of police violence. And I understand why they are offended by the phrase “All Lives Matter.”

It’s just amazing how long it took to begin to deal with Eric Garner’s murderer. Five years to fire him. $5.9 million settlement to his family. And never indicted!

That’s what makes this case special!

    • Rosie- Why do you automatically mention that the woman you are referring to in your lie is Black? Does it really matter? How does the color of her skin affect the lie you are telling? Well anyway, let me know!

  15. First, from the video evidence I believe it sure seems certain that George Floyd’s death was clearly murder and the cop or cops responsible need to go to jail. Second, undeniably, there are systematic structural issues in many if not most police departments that need to be continuously improved upon. None, have arrived. Third, mass protests are a First Amendment right and should not be hindered. But I believe history has shown that they must be peaceful to be effective (MLK and others like him changed the planet). Fourth, looting and/or burning other peoples’ property is obviously immoral, illegal and counterproductive for everyone and those doing so should be arrested and punished. Fifth, my response to BLM has been for years, “Absolutely, black lives matter!” And, before a white person complains about minority grievances regarding prejudice and injustice he/she should attempt with an honest heart to walk in a minority’s shoes and really try to understand what minorities of color deal with daily, if not hourly. To this end, I have tried for a long time to be a agent of change in my own circle of life and I am willing to even go to another town or city to try to help make a real lasting difference, using my time, talents and treasures. Let me share a story or trying to do just that.

  16. Here is the story…I few years ago I called a major police department in a large metropolitan area and asked to speak with whoever was in charge of Community Relations. I ended up having a very long dialogue with the person in charge of CR. During that conversation, I asked her (an African American woman by the way) if there was a pilot program that she knew of anywhere in the country where all the key groups of influence were working together and putting forth a real effort to hopefully make long term, lasting progress on the issue. She shared how in one very poor community recently she was part of doing just that. She shared the story with me in detail. She met with community leaders (business, religious, government, law enforcement, schools, citizens) over a long period and had many meetings to work to together for real progress for that community. Sadly, the end result of their very extensive effort was this: the community was not committed to improving the town. Why? It boiled down to the fact that they were most fearful of losing their federal and state funding. Essentially, they were afraid to rise out of last place. Incidentally, she could not tell me where all the funding went if it was not going to help the people in the community.

Needless to say, I was devastated and extremely saddened but not paralyzed. I am still looking to be part of such a solution someplace where a community wants to rise from the ashes and be a model for their county, state or nation. But until I do find such a place that truly desires to do so, I will continue to try to make a difference in my conduct and attitude everyday by truly loving ALL my neighbors until the Lord takes me home.

P.S. I am open to suggestions and feedback.

  17. FYI

The Democratic Alliance (DAA) for Action of Santa Clarita(https://www.daa.org/post/local-groups-concerned-with-city-of-santa-clarita-s-response-to-protests)announced yesterday:

“It has come to our attention that there is a rumor circulating of a planned protest in support of the Black Lives Matter movement on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at 12pm at the corner of Valencia Blvd. and McBean Pkwy. As local leaders of progressive organizations, we are not aware of or in contact with any organizers of either local or out of town groups planning such an event.

Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend to our members and supporters that they not attend or participate in any action in the City of Santa Clarita on Thursday, June 4th.”
