‘Soft Lockdown’ At McGrath Elementary School Lifted After Filming With Simulated Gunshots

Dr. J. Michael McGrath Elementary School in Newhall was put on a soft lockdown Wednesday after shots were possibly heard due to filming in the area, officials said.

Around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, residents in the area of McGrath Elementary School heard some popping sounds coming from nearby, said Shirley Miller, a spokesperson with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“The school was put on a soft lockdown, but it has been lifted,” Miller said.

Deputies have confirmed the noise was a film crew in the wash, according to Miller.

Jeff Pelzel, superintendent of the Newhall School District, confirmed that the soft lockdown has been lifted and the campus is safe.

  1. I’m retired from the motion picture and television industry, the location manager should have notified residents and especially any schools in the surrounding areas of the planned simulations.

  2. The school was notified before filming as was the sherriff’s office. Sheriff’s are on site today with the film crew as well.

  3. The school was notified in advance as was the sheriff’s office. Deputies were on location with the film crew as well.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
