Suspicious Person Outside Of Mountainview Elementary Prompts ‘Lockdown Drill’

A suspicious person that was “behaving in a concerning manner” outside of Mountainview Elementary School in Saugus on Monday prompted school officials to initiate a “lockdown drill,” officials said.

At around 8:30 a.m. Monday, officials with Mountainview Elementary began receiving calls of a suspicious person walking near the school, according to Kathleen Demsher, principal of the elementary school.

“The individual was behaving in a concerning manner and remained near the school and the park,” Demsher wrote in an email to parents Monday morning.

After school personnel went out to locate and observe the suspicious person, they proceeded to call deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and conduct a lockdown drill.

“The school held a lockdown drill to ensure all students remained indoors and safe, just to be sure,” Demsher wrote.

Parents who had called to report the suspicious individual to the school also remained nearby to help Mountainview officials and deputies locate the person. Additionally, landscape workers from a nearby park followed the individual to keep track of the suspicious person, according to Demsher.

“Law enforcement wanted to give our community and school compliments on how the situation was handled,” Demsher wrote. “Having the students in a lockdown drill kept everyone in a safe location.”

While officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were unable to confirm if anyone was detained in relation to the incident, Demsher wrote that deputies did take the person into custody.
