“It’s good to know because the insurance companies use these parts as well,” said Cesar Ranuschio of Body Shop 661.

1. Original

Original parts come directly from the manufacturer, according to Ranuschio.

“It’s the best ones because they’re brand new, but sometimes when cars get a little bit older, it’s hard to put all original parts because then the value goes up higher than the car,” he said. “It might chance it not being worth fixing it, so there’s other parts too to help out.”

2. Used

Used parts are also an option, especially for older vehicles, because they are still originally from the manufacturer but are no longer new.

“Sometimes when they’re used, if it’s a bumper and they’ve been repaired too many times, they start getting too many layers,” Ranuschio explained. “So it’s better sometimes to go with after-market.”

3. After-Market

After-market parts are foreign-made replicas of the original manufacturer’s part, according to Ranuschio.

“It’s a copy of the original part,” he said. “Sometimes they don’t line up perfectly, but we’re good at it so we’ll open the holes, line it up better to make sure it looks great, and it saves about half the price on the part.”

While after-market parts may not be available for European cars, they are often an option for commuter cars, Ranuschio noted.

Ranuschio pointed out that choosing used or after-market parts over original parts can be a budget-friendly way of keeping an older car on the road after a collision.

“You don’t want to get into a new car payment or (have) to get another car, so we’ve got to keep these things alive and take care of what we’ve got,” he said. “And we’ve got to do it the most affordable way possible.”
