Reaching Out For Help: The First Step To Recovery For Behavioral Addiction

Officials from Desert Solace, an inpatient rehabilitation center for substance and behavioral addiction, describe how reaching out for help can break down the shame at the center of the addictive cycle.

Because substance and behavioral addictions both come from an underlying desire to escape pain and shame, Desert Solace officials suggest that opening up about the addiction can be the first step towards recovery.

Desert Solace co-founder Jerri Jorgensen described both substance and behavioral addiction as starting with a sense of low self-worth.

“Usually addiction of all kinds is ‘I’m not enough,’” Jorgensen said.

In particular, Jorgensen explained that those suffering from addictions often feel they aren’t living up to expectations set by family members, friends, co-workers, religious leaders or themselves.

“And that’s where the pain hits; that can be the trauma,” said Jorgensen. “And then they act out.”

Among the behavioral addictions treated at Desert Solace, Jorgensen says there’s been a steep rise in those seeking treatment for pornography addiction. This addiction is particularly isolating, as those with this addiction usually seek out pornography online anonymously and engage with it secretively.

Alongside other behavioural addictions such as gaming and gambling addictions, pornography addiction can lead to financial difficulties and can cause those suffering to lie to others about where their time and money is being spent, causing relationships to suffer.

When people who are suffering from substance or behavioral addiction build up the courage to come forward and be honest about their addiction, Jorgensen said that many are surprised to find out how much support is available.

“The courage (to reach out for help) is there; sometimes we just don’t tap into it,” Jorgensen said. “We’ve got it. We have love. We have peace. But how often do we tap into those things? They’re always there; we don’t even have to create it.”

Whether they’re discussing their addictions with a trusted loved one or in a group setting with others who share the same history of addiction, once communications open up, there’s room to move away from the shame at the heart of the addiction.

“This is how we shift the world,” said Jorgensen. “Coming out of our shame, having the courage to reach out and say, ‘This is what I’ve done, this is where I am, this is where I’ve been, and I’m going forward.’”

By emphasizing communication and connection throughout the recovery process, Desert Solace aims to help their clients develop self-esteem and learn to set healthy boundaries with themselves and others.

Additionally, Desert Solace seeks to help build a sustainable support network for clients’ families through group sessions for spouses of clients over the phone. These calls, along with calls to veterans of the program, help maintain recovery over the long term, even after the inpatient treatment has ended.

Ultimately, Jorgensen said that the aim of recovery programs should be to help foster a supportive network for people to move forward in their lives.

“The opposite of addiction is connection,” Jorgensen said. “It’s connection to themselves; recognizing who they are at their core. Without all the masks and all the stories and all the stuff that we put on ourselves.”

To that end, Jorgensen suggests reaching out for help.

“The days of isolating are over,” she said.
