For those who might be wondering what sets Surfaces USA in Castaic apart from the big box stores in Santa Clarita, Surfaces USA owner and interior designer Jen Brown answered that question during a recent interview on KHTS AM-1220.

While Brown herself shops at box stores a few times a week for supplies, she said that’s where their main focus stays: supplies and hardware.

“They’re not meant to redesign your home, they’re not meant to help you pick everything out,” Brown said. “That’s not to say there’s not talented people there, but that is not what they are trained in; that is not their specialty.”

While box store employees “dabble” in a little bit of everything, according to Brown, the team at Surfaces USA is comprised of experienced interior designers who specialize in kitchen and bathroom remodels and flooring.

“Anything we can do to improve or enhance the home, that’s our specialty,” Brown said. “I am an interior designer; that’s what my background is. So by trade, I’m a designer. I just happen to love the construction side and tearing things apart and putting things back together.”

Another aspect usually missing from box stores is the personal relationships Brown creates with her clients as she helps them transform their houses into their dream homes.

“It’s such an amazing thing to be a part of,” she said. “Especially to be able to do it locally, and then you run into your clients at Costco or any of the restaurants. It’s so much fun to be a part of a community where you have your business and you are welcomed in these homes. It’s just a different feeling than you get from going to a big box store.”

Before she moved her career in the direction of home remodels, Brown focused on the design and construction of new homes in and around the Santa Clarita Valley.

“Most of the models that were done out here in the late 90s, early 2000s, I did those,” she said. “I concentrated mainly on the Santa Clarita Valley as it was growing, so I can tell you pretty much almost every floor plan in the communities that were built in the last 15 to 20 years.”

The average person redecorates their home every five to seven years, whether it’s a matter of simply updating the backsplash or flooring or doing a complete overhaul and redoing multiple bathrooms.
