California is set to receive hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funds to help with community recovery from recent wildfires.
On Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris announced that the federal government would be providing $600 million to aid communities recovering from California wildfires.
With the $600 million in federal funding, the focus is to help areas burned by wildfires recover through cleanup, reforestation, infrastructure repair and watershed restoration, according to the office of Governor Newsom.
In addition to the $600 million in federal funds set aside for California, $48 million in federal funding is set to go toward Joint Chief’s Landscape Restoration Partnership projects, four of which are in California.
The projects help protect water quality, enhance wildlife habitats and make landscapes that are climate-resilient.
On the other hand, Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed budget for 2022-23 would put $1.2 billion in state funding toward activities to prevent wildfires.

Essentially, while the federal government’s funding focuses in large part on repairs and recovery, Newsom’s proposed budget for California would focus more on wildfire prevention.
Under Newsom’s proposal, the funding from California would go toward projects to increase forests’ resilience toward wildfires and develop technology to detect wildfires early.
Projects funded by California would include forest thinning, prescribed burns, reforestation, grazing and fuel breaks, according to Newsom’s representatives.
A portion of California’s $1.2 billion in funding would also go toward new radars and technology to help wildfires be detected early, representatives said.
Newsom’s proposed budget would also put $648 million in funding toward firefighters and firefighting equipment, including fire hawks and helitankers.
According to the budget, another $172.5 million in state funds would go toward improvement projects which would include replacing fire stations and creating accommodations for new helicopters and aircrafts, according to Newsom’s budget plan.
