The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is encouraging Californians to add applying for a REAL ID to their list of back to school tasks.

On Tuesday, the California DMV advised California residents to switch to REAL IDs before May 3, when the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is set to require a REAL ID to board domestic flights.

“Whether you’re a parent dropping off the kids at school or a college student taking your last class before lunch, make plans to swing by a DMV office afterward to complete your REAL ID application,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “Don’t forget to do your homework before heading to the DMV office – you’ll need to fill out your REAL ID application online ahead of time.”

To apply for a REAL ID, visit the REAL ID website. Applicants need to provide one proof of identity, two proofs of California residency, and a Social Security number.

The REAL ID checklist lists what types of documents can be submitted.

Once the online application is complete, the original uploaded documents and a copy of the confirmation page can be brought to the DMV office appointment. There, documents will be verified and the photo of the applicant is set to be taken for a new REAL ID.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) does not require those under the age of 18 to provide identification when traveling domestically.

However, if they do not have identification, they will need to travel with a companion who has a federally approved form of identification like a REAL ID.
