Based on AAA booking data, the most popular travel destinations are European cities, Alaskan cruises and tourist attractions.
Labor Day weekend marks the end of this year’s record-breaking, blockbuster summer travel season. Although AAA doesn’t provide a comprehensive holiday travel forecast, it does provide a number of trends and helpful hints.
Domestic travel over the Labor Day weekend is up 9 percent year-over-year, with a 2 percent decrease in cost.
The Alaska cruises for the weekend have sold out, according to the AAA booking data. At this time of year, many choose to travel because of the lower temperatures and fewer crowds. Because of this, Seattle has surpassed all other destinations to become the best place to spend Labor Day weekend, an increase of nearly 30 percent from the previous year. Two other popular Labor Day destinations are Juneau and Anchorage.
“If you’re interested in going on an Alaska cruise next summer, the time to book is now to lock in the best rate and ensure you get the type of cabin and scenic views you want,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group.
Other popular places to visit on Labor Day include San Francisco, Orlando, Boston, Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago and New York.
Booking data from AAA shows a 4 percent decline in international travel over the Labor Day weekend compared to the previous year.
International travel costs have increased by 11 percent due to inflation and many people have taken international summer vacations, which is another contributing factor. Most of AAA’s international Labor Day trip bookers are headed to European countries. European cities make up eight of the top 10 international destinations booked through AAA.
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an important document recognized by authorities around the world, and it is something that travelers renting a car abroad should think about getting. It is mandatory in certain nations, such as Spain and Italy. AAA is the only entity in the U.S. authorized by the State Department to issue an IDP.
AAA recommends that travel insurance be added to ensure that trips and wallets are protected until the time of travel.
