Two Acton residents spoke out this week against a county decision they say could pave the way for unwanted development but in the end, the project still got the green light.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 Tuesday to deny an appeal and approve a change to a recorded map for a vacant property north of Sierra Highway in Acton. The change removes planned driveways and fire lanes that were never built.
Local advocates Jacqueline Ayer of the Acton Town Council and Ruthie Brock of Acton Takes Action urged supervisors to reconsider, warning even small changes can have big impacts in a rural community.
“Even the smallest changes in planned development can have huge impacts on a small community like Acton,” Brock said.
Ayer argued the modification doesn’t meet legal requirements and could open the door to future commercial development.
County officials pushed back, saying the decision is limited to removing outdated map features, not approving any new project.
Supervisor Kathryn Barger acknowledged those concerns but emphasized the scope of the vote.
“The record clearly shows that this action does not approve any development, does not alter zoning or land use designations, and does not authorize or pre-approve a gas station or any other commercial project,” Barger said.
While the property has sat vacant for years and no construction is planned, some residents remain concerned about what this could mean down the line.
Despite those concerns, supervisors unanimously approved the modification and denied the appeal.
