Brave New World Comics, a comic book shop based in Newhall, is set to host three different writers who worked on a new Star Trek comic for an in-store signing on Saturday.
On April 27, Brave New World Comics is set to host writers Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing and Jim McCann for a signing of Issue #1 of “Star Trek: Year Five.”
“Brave New World has been kind enough to open their doors to us,” Kelly said. “We’re going to show up and be thrilled to meet people.”
For those unfamiliar, the original “Star Trek” television show that debuted in 1966 was centered around the voyage of the starship USS Enterprise, and the five-year voyage its crew took, “to boldly go where no man has gone before.”
The original series documented the first three years, and a subsequent animated series showed the fourth, but the final year has never been fully explored until now, according to the writers.
“It’s a story’s that’s never been told,” McCann said. “It’s set before the original motion picture, and details what the crew went through. And boy did they have to go through a lot.”
The series is being treated like a season of a television show, with Kelly and Lanzing essentially acting as showrunners, and writers such as McCann writing one-off stories.
“What Jackson and Collin have in store is fantastic and so Trek-y, and you can tell the passion that they have,” McCann said. “The passion that we all have for Trek resonates throughout the series.”
The series is being published by IDW Publishing, who Lanzing and Kelly had been talking to for several months before the project was approved. Following the green-light for the series, a one-day summit was held for the writers, according to McCann.
“It was amazing to be in that room,” McCann said. “The energy in the air, the excitement, the ideas bouncing back and forth, everyone had just great respect for everyone in the room, and were so encouraging.”
All three of the writers set to be present at the signing noted they have been in love with the Star Trek series since they were young.
“Writing this series, it’s a dream come true,” Lanzing said. “It may be a cliche, but I feel like I’ve been working my whole life towards this.”
According to Lanzing, the 24-issue series is set to show readers the “last great mission, last great mistake and last great triumph” of Captain James T. Kirk, who was portrayed by William Shatner in the original series.
“It’s his last days in command of the Enterprise,” Lanzing said. “We’re going to try and bring in some real reflection about what this journey has meant to him and his crew.”
Kelly and Lanzing have been friends with the people over at Brave New World Comics for some time, and the pair always enjoy coming to the store for signings, according to Lanzing.
“Brave New World has been a huge supporter of Jack and I for a long time,” Kelly said. “We absolutely love the energy of the community.”
While the new series takes place after the events of the original show, the writers all said that they worked to make sure the story would be accessible to everyone.
“Anyone can walk in and pick this up,” McCann said. “It’s definitely going to be a ride that you won’t forget. We are absolutely boldly going where no one has gone before.”
The signing is scheduled for Saturday, April 27 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Brave New World Comics in Newhall.
