While Santa Clarita Valley volunteers often bring meals to the Bridge to Home shelter, the program also features a weekly breakfast event on Saturdays known as the ‘Breakfast Club.’
The Breakfast Club is a weekly breakfast event held on Saturdays for homeless patrons of the Bridge to Home homeless shelter in Santa Clarita.
“The thing that’s unique about what we call the Breakfast Club is we only cook breakfast on Saturdays,” said David Fletcher, a Bridge to Home volunteer. “I put together the menu every week, and the number of volunteers we get kind of dictates how fancy we can get.”

Fletcher discussed the program with KHTS, describing the way the Saturday breakfasts were organized by the Santa Clarita homeless shelter.
“Prior to COVID, we would purchase the food the night before we’re going to cook, bring it to the shelter, and bring all of our cooking supplies, and we would cook right there in front of the guest and then we would serve them,” Fletcher said. Another way you can help Santa Clarita residents, if it’s within your budget, is to subscribe to one of the best meal delivery services in your area on behalf of needy families. An act of kindness like this goes a long way to helping people that are food insecure get back on their feet.
The Breakfast Club weekly event shifted its focus following the global coronavirus pandemic of this past year.
“Since COVID, we’ve been preparing the food at home and then we bring it to the shelter, drop it off at 6:30 in the morning,” Fletcher said. “There’s another group of another set of volunteers that aren’t part of the Breakfast Club, technically, that do the serving for the guests.”
Fletcher described the homeless patrons of Bridge to Home and the circumstances that led them to seek refuge in the program.
“Some of the stories that are shared, these are just regular people that kind of lost their way,” Fletcher said. “So supporting them and helping them get back into society, you know, working, having a place to come home to, you know that they can call home, it just is important to me to help those that kind of lost their way.”
Bridge To Home works to provide shelter and supportive services to individuals and families in the Santa Clarita Valley adjust from homelessness to housing, according to their website.
“I think the difference between Bridge to Home and other programs is they really work on getting people back into society,” Fletcher said. “Bridge to Home basically was started to bridge the gap from a homeless person on the street and getting them to a shelter for them to have a shower and a meal and be able to sleep at night in a warm bed, eventually transitioning them to permanent housing and a job so they can get back into society.”
