On Tuesday morning, as people around Santa Clarita were commuting to work or sleeping in, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station (SCV Sheriff) and other officials were responding to a simulated active shooter situation.
From 9 to around 10:45 in the morning on Tuesday, SCV Sheriff hosted a training session at the former Sears building at the Westfield Valencia Town Center to help deputies and other officials practice responding to real active shooter situations.

“It’s important because it sharpens our skills,” said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for SCV Sheriff’s Station. “We need to be prepared mentally, physically for any kind of situation.”

Deputies from the SCV Sheriff’s Station were joined by members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Tactics and Survival Unit, the California Highway Patrol, the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) and American Medical Response (AMR), according to Arriaga.

Over the course of the training, gunshots resounded and smoke could be seen in front of the former Sears building as simulation rounds were fired.

Normally, during active shooter training, volunteers pose as victims and paintball rounds are used in place of bullets.

Sheriff’s deputies are expected to neutralize the threat then lead emergency responders into the area to treat those who are wounded.

“Normally we go through two different scenarios of active shooters during training,” Arriaga said.
The number of suspects, number of victims and the location vary based on the scenario and the location of training that day, according to Arriaga.

The goal for SCV Sheriff personnel is to participate in at least one active shooter training each month, although the station does not always host the events, Arriaga said.

During training, law enforcement officials are still able to answer calls that may go out throughout Santa Clarita because the deputies who are training are not scheduled to work at that time, according to Arriaga.

This way, the SCV Sheriff’s Station can remain fully staffed with on-duty deputies while off-duty deputies participate in shooter training.

“It’s great to have this kind of training,” Arriaga said. “It’s just best to be prepared for this.”
