Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Offer Tips To Avoid Being Scammed

With recent mass casualties occurring around the country, scammers are taking advantage of sympathetic residents to steal money from social media users, officials said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials are offering tips to help lower the number of people getting scammed.

“Unfortunately, some criminals take advantage of the situation to prey on the kindness of others,” reads a statement from the Department.

For Santa Clarita residents who may have come across emails, text messages or advertisements on social media asking for donations to help the victims and families of these tragedies, Sheriff’s officials urge you to make sure these are not scam websites.

“If you receive emails, text messages or are directed to a website that requests personal information, be wary of releasing any of your information,” the statement reads. “These are opportunities scammers take to conduct financial crimes.”

Red flags that residents are encouraged to look out for include:

  • Emails promoting tragedies requesting money
  • Emails requesting personal information such as names, address, social security numbers and credit cards
  • GoFundMe sites being advertised that may be questionable.

If you happen to come across emails, GoFundMe pages, text messages, etc., officials recommend that you do your research and get to know the organizations where you will be donating your money.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
