A Newhall man working in Northern California as a marijuana grow operation security guard was arrested last week for illegal possession of a firearm, among other charges, officials said Monday.
Luis Parra, 47, was arrested on Dec. 4 on multiple felonies and misdemeanors after a traffic stop in Ukiah, according to Sgt. James L. Wells of the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.
“As the deputy walked up to the car to contact the driver, he noticed numerous empty handgun holsters on the front seat and one attached to his belt,” Wells said.
The deputy inquired about the holsters and asked if there was a firearm in the vehicle, according to Wells.
The deputy learned there was a firearm between the driver’s seat and center console of the vehicle, and found it to be a fully loaded Smith and Wesson handgun with a live cartridge in the chamber, according to Sheriff’s officials.
The suspect was reportedly a security guard for marijuana growing sites in the area and was on his way to work, according to Wells.
“Parra was unable to provide any documentation, such as a guard card, a concealed weapons permit or any documents which would allow him to possess the firearm in this manner legally,” Wells said.
A records check on Parra showed he was on DUI probation with numerous terms, including that he must have an interlock device on his vehicle and obey all laws. Parra’s driver’s license was also found to be suspended, according to Sheriff’s officials.
The suspect was found to have numerous criminal convictions that prohibit him from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition, according to Wells.
Parra was arrested for charges of a felon possessing a firearm, prohibited person possessing ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, carrying a loaded firearm which was not the registered owner, possession of a concealed firearm in a vehicle, violation of probation, driving with a suspended license and operating a vehicle without an interlock device, according to Sheriff’s officials.
Parra was booked at the Mendocino County jail, where he was held in lieu of $30,000 bail before being released, according to jail records.
